    • RE: Sabine Schmitz is getting turn 1 of the Nürburgring named after her

@essextee This line from The Drive article got me

"Renaming the first corner of the Nordschleife is even better though. Now, whenever you cross the start/finish line at track, Sabine Schmitz will be ahead, and every lap will start with her sending you on your way."

    • I love it already

Bought a truck! It’s a bit rough around the edges but it will be a fun relatively cheap project. 1984 Toyota pickup. Dx? 5 speed. 4x4. Sunroof. 115k miles and a rebuilt engine 2k miles ago. Going to work great as a second vehicle. First things to fix are a turn signal, driver side window is off it’s track and there is no passenger seat belt.

    • Just in case anyone was wondering

An 03 wrx wagon fits pretty nicely in a shipping container.

This is basically my garage now so I wanted to make sure I can pull it in and at least access the engine bay and walk around it relatively easily. I knew it would fit just because cars do come over in containers and not all roll on roll off. Luckily I’m fairly skinny and can open the door enough to get out so no weird rolling the window down and climbing out.

    • We’re back!

After about 4-5 slow weeks, the truck is back!
Carb rebuilt and it finally runs! At least, I drove it to the gas station and back.

Not entirely sure what the issue was but I took of the air horn and got the needle seat slightly tighter, the idle cut solenoid didn’t have a o ring on the end that supposed should have been there this whole time, and I messed around with the idle air mix and idle speed screw. Somehow got it running after that.

It was idling generally fine and I backed it out, slipped on the ice a bit and it stalled going forward. Wouldn’t restart but I went and tweaked the idle speed screw a little and it fired back up.

Drove down the street a bit where it seemed fine but then wanted to die again while turning around but I have it some gusto and we made it back. Some more tweaking and I took off for the gas station.

Started off fine but at some point it started to barely take any throttle input and sputtering. I was also super low on gas that had been sitting a while so possibly the culprit there.

Gassed up, continued to tinker a bit with screws and headed back. Pulled strong but there is a bit of hesitation on initial acceleration. Not really sure what’s going on there.

We will see what happens tomorrow when I try to drive it to work for a bigger shakedown. I truly was just in here turning screws hoping for the best with little idea if any of it was helping or which way to even turn the screw. Carb tuning is some sort of witchcraft so I’ll be making some sacrifices at the pentagram tonight

    • She lives!

Got the last little things buttoned up on the Subaru, found a fire extinguisher, gave a Hail Mary, and fired her up. I did prime the fuel pump a couple times but it fired right up! No weird smells or smoke. Let it run for at least 15 minutes with some revs once it was warmed up and all seemed to go well. I’m going to let it cool back down before I pull the funnel and put the cap back on the expansion tank. I’ll still drive the truck tomorrow so I can take some test drives just in case something did go wrong.

Then it’s on to the many many more projects for both vehicles

    • Had a bit of an accident

Well friends. Every few years I seem to really do myself in. Had a bit of a snowboard accident with a tree while avoiding someone and burst fractured my L1 and compression fractured my L2. No surgery and I'm already out of the hospital to sit around with a brace on for at least 4-6 weeks.
Anyone have any brilliant ideas of how to keep myself busy with limited mobility out of the usual binge watching TV and reading?
Expect low effort shitposting and nonsense comments coming from me while aimlessly sitting around

    • Fixed!

Bow before my mighty carburetor skills! The truck is fixed. I’ve said this before and it wasn’t fixed but I’m more confident this time. I took it to the gas station down the road with no issues and everything running smoothly. I didn’t top 45 so I’ll have to get it on the highway and drive it a bit more before I’m completely sure it’s fixed but at least it’s drivable and it won’t stall from a stop anymore!

    • Hello

It is the day of my birth. Many beers were/are had. Snow sliding happened. My parents are amazing and are going to buy me a tool chest but I can’t decide. Full stack or wide boy.

I think I have the wrong size tall boy. Both are $398ish when I was at the Home Depot earlier.

    • General stuff and things

Got the truck back together and running today thanks to some new studs. Had to take a wire brush to clean some threads and after getting everything on I realized I forgot to put the accelerator cable back on. Pretty uneventful other than that.
      89433E5E-6C11-4A51-A48C-5A6564C47840.jpeg
Filled up the fuel bowl and it fired right up after a couple cranks and fuel got in all the orifices. Let it idle briefly and took it for a very quick drive around the hood where it promptly died. I think it was just the battery dying on me since it’s pretty old itself and I haven’t drove the truck in at least a month. Fired right up after it died.
      5950136D-C14F-4F93-B23F-854DBCCCE8F9.jpeg
Of course I’ll have to check tomorrow if there is fuel in the bowl since that leak was one of the main reasons for this fix. I didn’t see it leaking anywhere so yet again my hopes are high. I want to cross engine things off the list before I head in to the rest of it. Now that the weather is nice I need to get to fixing the e-brake cable and change rear brake drums while that’s all apart. Probably fix this damn seat first though so I can move it and not have to rely on 2x4s behind the seat to prop it up.
      37173C20-8218-405E-A52A-BB65D4368A8B.jpeg
I also need new tires on the truck but that’s relatively easy, just drop it off, spend money, and have new tires. This is all so I can take the Subaru off the road for a bit and fix its fuel leak. Remove manifold, replace fuel lines, and fix whatever happens to break during that process. I won’t even get in to the body work mayhem I plan to attempt this summer.

I also went to the doctor today and things are looking good. I can slowly use my back brace less and get in to physical activity again. That’s going to be very slow for me since it’s my back and it’s not exactly something you want to immediately jump back in to full activity a month after breaking. He did say I could go hit some easy groomers this season but I think I’ll wait until the season comes back around

    • Did truck stuff

I've had the truck for several months now and I finally took it on some rough roads. It was an absolute blast other than the part where my seat is kind of terrible and I rubbed a small wound on my back hitting one of the metal seat bars bouncing around. I didn't even leave 2WD somehow. I briefly thought about getting out to lock the hubs just to tool around in 4Lo but it started raining and I wanted to get the hell out of there since my windshield is terrible and leaks.

      IMG_2332.JPG

I think the top fixes right now are still the passenger window. A new windshield that is properly sealed which is a massive pain in the ass. If I'm going to pull the windshield I'm going to want to sand and repaint around the edges. And lastly, of course, the driver seat. I don't know if I can find somewhere to try and re foam and re cover it.

Also found a fantastic patch of changing leaves.

@Gabriella I just stood in our front office window for about two minutes and saw three teslas. Thought there would be more honestly. I see a ton around here, mostly Teslas. I’ve been seeing some rivians and Mach-e’s lately though. Saw an electric mini and e-jeep the other day. At least one taycan floating around.
