    • The Actual POS Camaro

It occurred to me that since I’ve owned this thing since before Jalopnik was even a thing I’ve never given an overview of it.

Notice the lovely silver junkyard fender here.

Here we see the other fender and the hood which were from a 77 that was buried in weeds next to a barn.

The oh so sexy posterior with the big spoiler. Unfortunately whoever added the spoiler didn’t put in the stronger tension spring so the trunk doesn’t stay open without the help of a piece of wood in the hinge.

And the lap of luxury! I do have the console and correct shifter to install.

Last, but not least we have three hundred and fifty cubic inches of malaise POWAH. I think this came from a 70s truck. It had a rebuild at some point in its life but that certainly didn’t add many ponies.

    • New Addition to Family Fleet

I am tardy in reporting an addition to the family fleet. My wife retired her Infiniti EX35, which she was never that thrilled with, in favor of a 2018 Audi Q5. She even managed to find one in the blue she liked and with the lighter interior that she always goes with if possible. That combination did require us to have CarMax ship it up from California, but it was worth it. Now she absolutely loves her car. It has less than 19,000 miles on it so I count it as practically new, but MaxCare was still purchased. It is still an Audi.

    • RE: What’s the story of your Oppo username?

@distraxi Mine is as easy as it comes. I own a Camaro. It’s a POS.

@Nick-Hynds It certainly wasn’t Henry that advocated integration.

    • Camaro inception

I went down to fill the Camaro’s tank with some ethanol-free gas since it’s probably the last fill up of the season and the gas pump welcomed me with this

Which was nice. It would have been nicer if I didn’t have to sell a kidney to pay for it.
I also got a “Camaro wave” from a guy in a 74 or 75 which was a first. Normally guys in shiny Camaros pretend they don’t see the POS.

    • File under: Even a bind squirrel

I'm stuck in a tourist trap town in Maui while my wife and her sister shops for useless tourist shit, but somehow I've stumbled into a decent bar. Hand mixed drinks, no AC but good use of the trade winds to keep it comfortable, and comfortable bar stools. I have found my spot!

    • Unsolicited status report

After The Summer from Hell delayed it, I finally got the Camaro fired up yesterday. My dad came over and we did the final thrash and managed to get it to run. A few things need attention, though.

      • Basic tuning. The carb and timing need to be fine tuned. Did enough to run but need to dial them in.

      • The starter wires are uncomfortably close to the exhaust and, even with the protective sleeve they’re in, something has to be done to hold them further away.

      • Found some melted boots on the plug wires. A new set is coming.

      • The main issue: The valve train was clacking like hell. I can’t believe I got it that wrong. I did have an issue where the rockers were too narrow to get a socket in to tighten up the nut properly and that might have been part of it. Me screwing up is the other. Ordered some polylocks to help that but it feels ridiculous for this very tame engine.

So, progress? The tuning issue is normal but the other two could have been dealt with earlier if I had just looked at the, (pretty old) wires and admitted that the rocker adjustment wasn’t right. Denial isn’t your friend!

@davesaddiction Building in a desert would seem to me to be the opposite of sustainable unless the population is kept very low.

@Britishvillaininatl Run flats would certainly be a contributing factor. I'm not surprised that CarMax didn't install the Jag specific tires but I am surprised that they went with run flats instead of bog standard P Zeros. Unless they were unavailable due to the usual "supply issues".

@HammerheadFistpunch I've tried that but, to me, they have the background engine noise sound effect way too loud and it becomes tiring. Like being on long flight without headphones.

@jminer I'm using Chrome on Windows 11. It wouldn't work for me at all. I tried multiple times on multiple posts with YouTube links with no luck unless I posted a reply but if it's just something weird with my setup then that's cool.

@jminer It seems the browser "back" button doesn't work on posts with YouTube links. Strange.

@OhCrikeyTheRozzers I think having the Conti is fine. 70s land barges are having a bit of a renaissance and bring a bit of fun. You can't help but laugh at the sheer excess.
