    • Ingenuity finds something cool on Mars...

Specifically, our intrepid space helicopter's 26th flight got images of the wreckage of the backshell that protected Perseverance, Ingenuity, and the sky crane during entry into Mars' atmosphere, as well as the parachute that slowed the initial descent:

Obviously most of it has been destroyed, but NASA is eagerly examining the wreckage imagery to see if the damage and scorching matches what their models predicted, so that future missions can benefit from a more accurate understanding of entering into Mars' atmosphere.

NASA Sees ‘Otherworldly’ Wreckage on Mars With Ingenuity Helicopter

This article doesn't say (unless I'm too tired and missed it), but the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the parachute and backshell from orbit not long after Perseverance's landing last year, so NASA knew where to send Ingenuity to get a look:

I'm surprised it fell so close to the landing spot, but I guess that's Mars' thin atmosphere at work.

I'd guess the tool is usually behind the wheel.

    • RE: Pineapple Pizza, a divisive subject

@trivet I'm strongly of the opinion that people should get what they want on pizza.

But in group situation, don't be a dick and be like "we should get a veggie pizza" and then eat like one slice of that, and several others. If you request an unpopular pizza, you better at least limit yourself to that. Otherwise just suck it up and get a cheese.

      Thats a 9000+ lbs Truck!

I hope it's not too political to say that 9000lb vehicles should require training and a license endorsement, and quite possibly shouldn't even be available for non-commercial purposes and that vehicle safety rules should focus more on pedestrian/cyclist/other vehicle safety rather than on occupant safety.

an ancient platform with a dinosaur yet sonorous Yamaha-designed DOHC V8 that revs to 7,200 rpm is just not in the cards

You say that, and yet there's a more affordable car that matches those requirements nearly perfectly:

Is it actually a burger if it's not made out of beef?

I mean turkey burgers are a (terrible) thing. I'm fine with it.

Personally I think the Impossible burgers are pretty good. Probably not quite as good as actual beef, but obviously better environmentally, and much better for animal wellfare. I stock up whenever I see a good sale. Beyond is decent enough as well, though Impossible is definitely better (I like the Beyond brats). I've tried a bunch of other brands and those two are the only ones that seem close enough to real burgers to satisfy the craving (Morningstar burgers are reasonably accurate simulation of terrible school lunch burgers).

@Highlander Yeah, seems a bit problematic... Apparently there's a pretty big backlog of lift orders if they want to upgrade to something newer and hopefully more reliable too (apparently Leitner-Poma is planning to basically double their US production capacity with a new facility, in addition to expanding their existing Colorado plant)

    • RE: Wax on, wax off, wax on wax off…

@Highlander I generally aim to do mine roughly every 5 days. And with my old skis they were normally looking grayish on the bases by then, so that's probably about right.

The wetter, icier, and more artificial snow we get out east is supposed to rougher on wax than the sort you get IIRC.

Figure I'll wax them now, and then wax again and cleanup the edges before I head out to Whistler in March.

But yeah, Nordic seems hard enough without any unnecessary friction.
