    • Looking back on 36k miles in a C8 Corvette

Back in 2019 my trusty 2012 335ix started to go full german and go after my wallet with some substantial cooling and electrical issues.

      20191014_085345.jpg

It was enough for me to start looking at options for a new car. I didn't want to deal with turbos anymore and I wanted something with more power. I got really close to ordering a ZL1 camaro but before I did I waited to see the new corvette unveiling. I wasn't planning on ordering one but then I heard the magic number of $59,995. I had a reservation in before the end of the event. Everything seemed great until March 11th 2020 and the world seemingly stopped. As an MEP engineer with projects in healthcare, banks, government building etc. I was an "essential worker." Day in and day out for months I would go into the city that looked like it was out of 28 days later. Somehow despite having to constantly be in and out of equipment that was packed with covid for months I got away unscathed. On September 4th I finally got a glimpse of my new car though I wouldn't be able to take delivery until the 8th.
      20200904_150627.jpg
I rolled in with a BMW and out with a Chevy. It felt unreal to be corvette owner at 27 let alone a mid-engined one. I hit the 500 mile break in just a few days later which coincidentally was right outside of a police station. No cops were there to see the first pull thankfully. From the jump the car has been nothing short of a dream, fast, reliable, smooth and loud when you want it to be. It gladly assumed daily driving responsibilities as it hurtled me throughout the northeast.

I used to just lurk on oppo but over the past few years I started to meet more of you all in person and it has been nothing short of a blast. I would find more and more reasons to just get out and go for a drive. Whether is was just crusing around town, flying at top speed on empty bridges at 3am, or even taking it off road to see a fellow oppo it performed dutifully without complaint. Sun, rain or snow nothing would stop me from driving it. The only drive that was white knuckled was when I stayed too long at my then gf now Fiancée's house and got caught in a blizzard on my summer tires. I procrastinated and I got burned by it badly, thankfully both the car and myself were able to get home safely and unhurt. Over all the trips I have done I think the most fun I have had was drving down to Atlanta to catch the Motul Petit Le Mans. The roads down there were an absolute blast and I desperately want to go back down this year. The more I think about my time with this car the more I smile and am eager to go for another drive. I hope everyone is able to have something that makes them feel like this regardless of make, model, wheels or powertrain. Maybe one day my path will have me driving right beside you oppo, I plan on putting many many more miles on this car. So if you see a C8 on the road it just might be me, I'll never want to get out from behind the wheel of this amazing car.

    • Make time for the drive

Yesterday's weather forecast wasn't looking great but I woke up early anyway and it looked better so I decided to go for a drive. Definitely made the right decision.

For anyone who wants the route you can find it below. Basically its the entirety of NY-97 into NY-30 and then into NY-28.

    • RE: Vette owners gonna Vette owner…

@barnie I look at car ownership with a simple premise. Drive them, get them dirty, rinse and then repeat. I am not saving my car for the next guy. I bought the whole speedometer and I am going to use the whole speedometer. Doesn't matter if its rain, snow or shine. As long as the keys are in my hand that corvette is going to be driven.

    • Much Needed Bath

The C8 was absolutely filthy and I felt so guilty for not being able to get to it since I've had to deal with a move and a lot of OT at work. I made the time today when I saw it was actually above freezing.

    • First Oil Change!

      20210303_141148.jpg

7012 miles in and I couldn't be happier with it. Still interested why they recommend the first one at 7500. Going on another drive this weekend so I am getting it taken care of early. Also planning out a couple of my first mods for the car. At the top of the list are some new rims I think I might get a set of HRE FF11s but am torn between a dark or light finish. The car just produces brake dust like crazy so I might go darker. Lighter colors really pop with the red though...

Pricing dropped for Procharger's kit too so I am looking forward to that much further down the line.

Car was absolutely filthy and needed to be cleaned up for Easter. It was the first time I detailed the engine bay which was easier to clean than I thought it was going to be.

And to top it off there is nothing mini about mini anymore. I don't know who they are designing for but its clearly not me. With how they are going I'll never own another BMW again.

    • RE: Oppo, what's an unpopular car opinion that you have?

@Fish-McSticks I'm still of the belief that its not a mustang. As a product I think its great and a big step forward for Ford in terms of quality and technology. The Mustang II for all its flaws still followed the same formula as the cars that came before and after it. Affordable, "sporty", RWD, coupe, 2 doors, practical. To me it felt like a BS marketing exercise to try and tack on some credibility when the car was good enough to stand on its own. My first thought was that it should have been the new Flex. At the most to me its just a Mach E. It doesn't ruin the Mustang for me but it does annoy me that now other companies are looking to do the same thing. I'll end on one point about Ford having the final authority over it. While yes they do control what they call the Mustang there is precedence of the customer telling them otherwise. (See Ford Probe aka the almost Mustang)

    • RE: Your current fleet

@Tripper Thanks! Its been a very slow build but I'm looking to get into it again especially since my Fiancee has taken an interest to it. Can't go wrong with either the X or H. I just know the differences are in the sound and flow with rpm. The X will be a higher howl and the H a lower growl. I'll keep you in mind though I don't see myself selling it. I got it because its sister car the Lincoln LSC is what gave me the gearhead bug. My first memory is being in the back seat as my dad was flooring it on an on ramp. Only downside was the LSCs were autos so I picked up this one.

    • RE: Your current fleet

@Tripper I rarely talk about it to be honest because I was in the process of modifying it until I lost garage space. I posted more about it during the old oppo. Right now its in a storage unit until my house search is done which will be by the end of the year so you may start to see more of it. Its loud as hell, will do burnouts for days and you beat it with a hammer to drive it.

Heres a current modlist for it:

      • An uncorked non original 302
      • full flowmaster 40 setup with an H pipe
      • upgraded clutch (dont remember as it was installed by a previous owner and a heavy one at that. Everyday is a leg day)
      • stripped interior minus the dash
      • Mild Cam upgrade
      • GT40 intake
      • 35lb injectors
      • short shift kit
      • lowering kit with a fresh Eibach setup waiting to be installed
      • upgraded radiator with expansion tank (make and model eluding me right now)
      • Momo Prototipo steering wheel
      • Corbeau Forza Wide passenger seat
      • Recaro Profi SPGXL driver seat
      • flaming river manual steering rack (needs to be installed)
      • subframe connectors (also needs to be installed)

*edit I am also fairly positive the car has nearly 250,000 miles as the odometer has definitely rolled over and based off previous history. The car was in California for about 28 years before it came to me.

@HFV_Junkyardin straight foxbodies are now about $5500. Only way they're $1500 now is when they are rusted completely through and missing an engine.
