RE: Mechanic to doctor (at 51)
Very cool.
However, it reminds me of this joke I heard a long time ago:
A proctologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out.
Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.
When the time of the practical exam approached, the proctologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?”
“The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.”
After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career

I've been a member for about a year.
My e39 was on Regular Car reviews last year:
I've got an old jeep that I abuse.
And I used to run a 24 Hours of Lemons team with a Merkur XR4ti out of NJ:

Plow jeep, gratuitous pics
the Old AMC 304 fired right up in the 8°F weather yesterday. and after a minute it was even running on all 8 cylinders.
The swampers stick out past the edge of the plow when its angled, so I don't get the cleanest edges, but it works. The rear locker behaves pretty well in the snow. I only use it on my driveway and never transport it during the winter. Road salt would return it to the earth in about a week.
Another pic from the fall because I can.

Windshield down
Almost as good as air conditioning on a day like today.
And you get up close and personal with some of the local insects during the drive!

RE: How to properly handle mis-identified listings on AutoTrader
I reported a listing last week.
They had a price advertised that was quite competitive. However, when you read the text it stated that the advertised price is the balance due AFTER a 20% down payment.
That is some deceptive shit.

RE: Car things you're happy you did and hope to never do again?
I will never again buy a 2.3 Ford thunderbird turbocoupe motor that totally ran when pulled, from a dude with a giant swastika flag hanging in his barn. Only to find that none of the turbocoupe fittings and sensors were actually compatible with the Merkur version. More disturbingly when we fired it up the night before the lemons race: cylinders 2 and 3 were melted. Which lead us to buying another non-turbo 2.3 that was upside-down in a field and had rust in #4 cylinder. We hand sanded the rust with 440 grit, slapped the turbo cylinder head on, got it running, dialed back the turbo boost and fought massive blow-by for the whole weekend but it did finish the race.
TLDR: I would never again buy a motor from a Nazi.
also @tysmagic that looks great, nice work.

e39 525i lifetime maintenance costs (the one from RCR)
This was my FIL's car, sat for 10 years, and I got it 2.5 years ago. He only drove about 3k miles between Dec 08 to Nov 2019.
He tracked every dollar ever spent on, save for fuel and car washes. Including a set of snow tires on rims from tire rack. All his work was done at shops/ dealershipsWhen I got it, I preventatively replaced the entire cooling system, brakes, spark plugs, tires, AC compressor, and all the fluids. I also fixed most of the common e39 problems. Did all the work myself with parts from FCP euro.
So, from driving off the lot, to 19 years later, 93k miles: $8,968.10
$5k worth of that was in the last 2.5 years. -
RE: Bye bye Breadvan
However, I LOVE that the owner was whipping this thing out on the track. Cars were meant to be driven, even if it means a warriors death.

RE: One paragraph horror story
I would take my chances with the tiger.
This is more akin to putting all your money and a hand grenade with the pin pulled into a motorcycle helmet. Then wearing it to the nitroglycerine factory during thunderstorm when an earthquake hits.

@Exage03040
X2 (or whatever)Drill and tap.
You may also want to consider replacing the other studs while you have all the tools out. Those threads are looking pretty knackered.

Is the learning function enabled automatically by the ECM? Or do you have to go to a dealer to have that service performed?
Takes a special scan tool function, so sounds like dealer only.
What about pulling a battery cable and cycling the ignition? I'm not sure how you do that with a push button, but you know what I mean.
Maybe wait 20-30 mins to be sure everything is discharged?

What 1911 are you waiting for?
There are a couple of 10mm ones I've been eying for years. Unfortunately the only ones that ever seem to be in stock are the ones on the "AiM just got a big bonus" side of the price range...
10mm is cool, but the prices for ammo haven't calmed down much since the plague a few years ago, and availability has been spotty.
I'd highly recommend a 1911 in 9mm, all that steel makes for a really nice shooter. Especially if you're only looking to shoot targets.
That being said, I really like my 10mm tactical-tupperware and my friend's Colt Delta Elite is a nice shooter as well.

RE: Excuse Me While I Pick My Jaw Up from Off the Floor.
That looks great! I always thought that was a handsome design along with the contemporary BMW 7 Series. Both cars have great presence.
Personally I would skip the spoiler, but I don't hate it.

RE: Faster Than What Ferrari?
@2Poor_sh2Furious well, Enzo is dead, And the jeep is mostly operational.
So unless he becomes one of those "28 days later" style fast zombies, I'm probably ok
