    • I'VE MENDED SOMETHING

      clarkson.jpg

Had a "holy shit, that actually works" moment with my van last night.

On my way to dropping it off for its yearly VA inspection, I stopped at the gas station like any normal day. 30 gallons of dino juice later, I'm ready to head to the shop to drop it off. Except, I turn the key, and...nothing.

But wait, the stereo's on, and all the accessory lights too.

Grabbed my hammer out of the toolbox, whacked the starter twice, and she fired right up.

      šŸ™ƒ šŸ™ƒ šŸ™ƒ

So, yeah, hitting the starter with a hammer actually works. Fingers crossed the starter/solenoid replacement in a 1994 ford e250 is cheap and everything is up to par before my trip to Deep Creek Lake this weekend.

      Happy Tuesday, everyone.

Welcome to weather in the mid-atlantic. First day back in the office after the holiday shutdown and the Wi-Fi is out. Gonna be a great day.

      Happy Monday!

    • New rack day

Stumbled into a killer deal on some brand new Saris MHS bits, specifically the 1+1 universal base and the MHS tray. Initial impressions are very good, almost like a less industrial 1up rack which is a positive for me. Everything is metal, the arms ratchet with a very satisfying ā€œclickā€ and don’t move once in position. The tray length will be great for my bigger bike with a looooong wheelbase that my current Kuat rack can’t accommodate to my liking.

So, anyone around the Annapolis MD area have a need for a v2 Kuat Transfer 2?

Bonus new (to me) bike day shot from last week - a 2021 Trek Domane in aluminum. No more dealing with isospeed and proprietary seatposts and heinous internal routing through the head tube. Just need to snag a standard GXP threaded bottom bracket and my Rival 1x11 hydro group will swap right over.

    • Specialized Status: one ride review

I’m on record here saying I’d rather be underbiked 5% of the time than overbiked 95% of the time, but I got the bug to have something with a little more travel and really jumped the shark with this one.

It’s a 2021 (maybe?) Specialized Status 140, which were never actually officially released in the US. Not really sure what Spesh was going for with the marketing of this one, but here we are.

Ride impressions: sweet bananas this thing is SLACK; 63.5* head angle in the high setting, which, compared to my epic evo, makes for quite a difference. Climbing with this thing is very much a ā€œwinch and plummetā€ affair. You’re not going to win a race to the top, but it’ll get you there as long as you keep the pedals turning. The weight doesn’t help. Whereas the epic can accelerate effortlessly on flats or uphill, this thing is basically just ā€œnah man, it’s fine, we’ll get there eventually.ā€

Descending? Sheeeeesh, it’s surprisingly nimble and unsurprisingly very stable. It’s 140mm of travel front and rear, and the 36/dpx2 do a pretty good job even though they’re the more basic dampers. Butcher tires at both ends mean there’s grip for days, but they take a little bit of effort to spin up. The mullet setup will take me a little getting used to, but the bike feels balanced.

Anyway, on mobile, so I’ll leave you with a few pictures.

    • Gone for a minute, now I’m back again

Checking in after a week in Brevard, NC and away from screens (aside from my liberal use of the trailforks app). Rode some bikes, drank some beers, ate some bbq. Didn’t really take many pictures, but here are a few:

The 4Runner, loaded down with bikes. Spent quite a few dollars filling up this beast during my travels:

      Name that tune!

Anyway, quick snap of the old girl’s new dancin’ shoes: 275/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks on Method 308 Roosts (zero offset). They are replacing 285/70/17 Wildpeaks on TRD Pro rims and 1.25ā€ wheel spacers.

Today is my last day of work until after the new year. However you’re celebrating, I wish you all a happy and restful remainder of 2021.

…and I’m selling mine! Full listing over on Swappo (link).

Oppo discount applies, would love for this to go to a good home where it will get a little more use. This has been my bike/camping rig for the past three years, but I’m ready to move to a different platform. Feel free to reach out with questions, I’ll tell you everything I know.

so, gorge myself with cheese for a few days prior so i'm all stopped up? got it.

@VincentMalamute haha 12, 11, whatever. the lady runs 8s on her road bike with a compact double, so a ti xtr cassette could be a fun stealthy upgrade that she'll never even realize is there unless she actually, i dont know, decides to remove her own rear wheel? (this will absolutely never happen šŸ˜‰ ) i highly doubt she'd feel a speed difference between the 11t thats there and a 12t anyway...

@VincentMalamute nice, the 28s might stretch out a bit more after you ride them a bit depending on the casing and tpi. 21mm ID with a 28 sounds nice for the seven.

those roval terra clx wheels are niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice, id love to get my paws on a set. i regret selling my traverse sl fatties back in 2020; one of the best carbon wheelsets ive ever owned.
