Ladies and gentlemen of Oppo, a moment that maybe only one or two of you have been waiting for, I present my new daily driver:
The stress of old car ownership got to me, I finally caved and sold one of my Lexuses. Not that I wanted to, but I felt it was a necessity. I just couldn’t fathom the idea of relying on two constantly broken cars to get me where I need to go.
With the LS400 gone, I now had the space and money to get myself something much newer and much nicer. I tried first at Carmax, but their interest rates were absurdly high, so my friends and I decided maybe it was time for something new. Originally the idea was Corolla Hatch, Civic, Impreza, or Mazda3, but one test drive in the 3 sold me. It’s just inherently much more impressive than the others.
There was one caveat: I wanted Soul Red Crystal on my 3. I’ve been a strong supporter of this color since it was first revealed, so I knew if I was going Mazda, I wouldn’t take another color. The salesman was more than gracious to find me one, and one week later, after some wheeling and dealing, I took it home.
Oppo, say hello to my 2021 Mazda3 Select Hatch.
I'm on day two of ownership, and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. It's got a great chassis, it feels nicely confident in the curves and although the steering does feel a little light, it is at least somewhat responsive, especially at higher speeds.
The best part for me (besides the color) is just how premium the car feels. The black leatherette seating, stitched dashboard, and matte black/brightwork trimmings really make this car feel like something worth double the price. The addition of all the latest safety and infotainment features for a fraction of what you'd get them on the Corolla and Civic for is also a nice plus.
I do have to apologize to those keen on three-pedal driving, turns out the manual is only available on the highest trim Premium models, and that was out of my budget. The transmission is very smooth and very responsive though.
I think I made a pretty good choice for my first new car loan, and plus this gives me daily driver peace of mind while I work on bringing the SC300 back to life. Much to the benefit of everyone (except for maybe BlueMazda2), RedMazda3 is here to stay.
