All the bullshit we've dealt with from both FEMA and the town, we finally were issued our occupancy permit. There's still some odds and ends to take care of and our walkthrough is tomorrow, but our builder said "do whatever you want". We'll be staying there tomorrow.

This is Kali
This is Kali. Was heading into town to pick to samosa burritos from the local Indian joint operating out of a gas station convenience store when i saw her trotting down a busy street.
Tag has a Santa monica ca address, I'm in Virginia. Voicemail full, owner did not immediately respond to text. So I'm keeping her safe until animal control shows up. She seems to be a good girl.

Cars bring people together
Scene: South Florida, near 11 pm
Me: upper thirties, white, driving a Honda pilot with wife sitting shotgun
Him: mid twenties, not white, driving a S2000 with a slightly too big wing playing music a little too loud.I roll my wife's window down as he pulls up to the light. He rolls his down, bracing for the worst.
Me: nice S2K!
Him: (tentatively excited) thanks!
Me: is it an AP1 or AP2?
Him: (genuinely enthusiastic) AP2! First year for them!
Light: already green for a few seconds
Me: nice!As we pulled away, my wife said i genuinely made that guy's night. I definitely think he wasn't expecting guy in dadmobile to be excited about his tuned Honda

Power Dad move
Talking with my buddy with two boys this weekend and he said he's gotten in the habit of, before he leaves a room, saying "hey [5 year old], keep an eye on [8 year old] for me, will ya?"
Partly to keep the five year old occupied with a task, but mostly just to piss off the 8 year old. That's som high level, high quality Dad trolling right there.
My son's soccer teammate's dad's ride -
Things are looking up, oppo. Got my work promotion!
My work promotion finally went through! Im now a supervisory engineering Team Lead. This has been a while coming, and is a big step in how I'm classified (and paid) where i work.
Also, the town signed off on the permits for our house! We still need the county to rubber stamp them, and our builder thinks we need some FEMA signatures, so unfortunately we still might not break ground until September 1, but the town had been the biggest sticking point.
All good things, oppo. All good things. -
The long tale of an Express truck damaging my miata
I walked outside this past May to take a ride in the Miata to find the door didn't open. Upon further inspection i saw a dent with white paint. And not a plastic bumper dent, but a scratched-to-bare-metal dent, keeping the door from opening. What the fuck?Check the assigned parking spaces, nothing matches. Realize it would have to be a metal bumper. Recall the delivery truck that drives by daily with a rattlecan white bumper. Fuck. Ok.
Call the local depot. They're very sympathetic and very helpful. We establish some communication and get some info. In the meantime, we spot the specific truck. Pass the info on, and hear the soon to be dreaded phrase "oh, that's Express, not ground. Ill pass you on to them".
They call and leave a message for the local Express station. I hear nothing. I call back. They're surprised Express didn't contact me, and call again for me. Still nothing. I call back. I get passed to Risk Management (where i should have been from the jump). Weeks have passed.
Risk does their thing, send out an independent appraiser. He says "if they're paying me, they'll pay you". Get passed to Claims (also independent). More weeks have passed.
Thus begins my months long dance with claims where I'm call them, they call the Express people, and Express refuses to call them back. Or calls them back, and won't provide them the info necessary to process the claims. Or says they didn't do it. Months pass.
Get passed up the chain at Claims. Finally get them to send out the truck in question. The truck in question, along with three managers, show up. We're able to show that the shape of the dent and the location on the Miata match up 100% if the driver backs up into it. One. Hundred. Percent. "Make sure we include that in our report", they say.
Claim denied. WTF? My extremely sympathetic claims person say the managers admit the damages match, but says their truck would never back up. Holy shit.
Following week, wife sees the truck pull into a dead end in the development and yells at me to start filming. We get him backing up. The same the next day. A three point turn the day later. We contact claims who says "you get me video of the truck backing up I'll pay in full right now".
Check showed up today, in November. Unbelievable.

Garagelopnic: the rackening
Installed a couple 4x8 storage racks up in the huge ceilings i have in my garage. We don't have our garage door yet so we'll wait for that to get installed before installing any more, but we may have room for one or two more.
I also cut myself, so now I've spilled blood in the garage. It's been christened! -
RE: First they came for our gasoline...
@houstonrunner not Russian, man. Hear me out.
Cows.
Smart ones, like in the Far Side cartoons. Getting blamed for global warming with methane pollution, so they knock out a gas pipeline. Getting killed for meat, so they knock out a meatpacking plant. Leather is next, my friend, you saw it here first

RE: Tattoos
@CarsOfFortLangley I'm not averse to the idea, but aside from wife (who says no), and kids (eh), there's nothing so meaningful I'd want it permanently there.

RE: What do we want? Standardized intermittent wiper markings
@EssExTee I have a Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda (not like the miata is out in the rain often). It is impossible for me keep track of how the wipers work in each car. It's such a non issue, and so irritating all at the same time.

RE: how to make friends at work
@farscythe Sorry, my misunderstanding. If you told her, that's that. No reason necessary, its your pto.
Had an employee telling me about a funeral he had to attend, and it was clear he was trying to justify the leave. I'm like dude, you have my condolences, but I also don't give a shit why you need leave. Just take it. We've discussed this. I won't say no.

RE: how to make friends at work
@farscythe I don't know, man. As a supervisor I cannot deny time off if requested without damn good reason, and that reason has never actually been defined by the union, so I can't deny time off. But an employee taking it without prior notice, or any notice, isn't OK either. If she can't say no, not sure what you gain by not telling her
