The latest in my cold start series:
Also was cleaning out the garage when my son asked to borrow the ramps so he could work on his car:
Many of you will remember this from a while back:
When my differential grenaded on the way back from lunch.
Well I’m happy to report, one used XJS diff later, and:
Bonus, ALL NEW EXHAUST from the headers back!
Huge thanks to my wife for allowing me to spend many times the value of this car on this foolish enterprise!
Last week my wife’s sister and niece flew into Mitchell (Milwaukee). My Volvo was full of junk needed for work the next day so my Jaguar was pressed into airport pickup service. I normally avoid driving it in the rain because rust but fortunately the nice new tires I just got along with the nice Bosch wipers I got for it 4 years ago she was perfectly up to the task.
And actually the back seat is slightly roomier than the Volvo’s anyway. And since my son’s car seat was in there we just used it all week long whenever all 5 of us went out.
AC was even working pretty well as it was super hot and sunny on the airport dropoff.
Milwaukee oppos will likely recognize this location …
Turns out driving around on 10 year old tires that look fine and have good tread is as bad an idea as everyone says it is.
I’ve been meaning to get new tires for the jag
Interestingly it drove fine like that and I hardly knew anything was wrong until it started making noise.
Got that sucker changed on the side of the Tri-State Motor Speedway in about 6 minutes.
on the SAAB. New serpentine belt. New ultra-important wiper blades…for the headlights. C’mon it was the 90s. Just because they were cheap. And most crucially, one new hood lift to replace the one I destroyed by closing it on a socket extension. These are so cheap and easy to replace I don’t know why people let them go.
Also, do your own joke:
We stayed in Sheboygan Falls last night, went to a cool petting zoo event at a farm. had a ride in a horse drawn wagon. got some good brats.
Then went to a cousin’s bridal shower at Elkhorn Lake - haven’t seen any of that family in years. It was nice but ditched it and stopped by Road America on the way home. We had noticed cars running on the way in. They let us in and we were able to roam the grounds freely. Seemed to be practice laps but quite entertaining. Actually my first time at a real race track.
Nice mix of cars, lots of Miatas, an old RX7, plenty of Porsche and BMW (e46 and e36 as well as newer) an Aston Martin that was really tearing up the track, and even a built 60s Mustang.
White BMW gets a little sideways at about :21
Also, didn’t get a chance for any pics but there must have been some kind of Jaguar event as there was an XJ6 just like mine, an XJ-S, an XKR-S as well as something pre-war I didn’t know. All mint and DOTS in the same block
At @ttyymmnn ’s suggestion I'll make a separate post. In response to a post by @jeepoftheseus earlier, I remembered about these which were once my great grandfather’s. It seems they were loaned to the Navy during WWI through the Eyes for the Navy program. I sorta remember this certificate hanging in my grandmother's basement when I was a kid. Signed by some Assistant Secretary of the Navy you might have heard of.
Last I checked the cert and check aren't hugely valuable but I think it's a pretty neat bit of family history. I really should get the lot reframed or preserved. It's in a fairly safe place at least.
@facw wow thanks. I couldn’t remember if the A380 was 4-engine. Are those in fairly wide use nowadays?
My workshop used to be very close to ORD, and once in a while an old 4-engine prop would fly over. That’s a pretty special sound. Hard to imagine what a sky full of them would have sounded like during the war.
@ttyymmnn forgive my ignorance and I know I could look it up, but what are (are there any?) other 4-engine planes in common use these days? I feel like I see 4-engine planes that don’t look like 747s but I’m not good at knowing the features from the ground
@rusty-vandura don’t know, I’m currently in wacky alternator hell with the Jaguar. No Lucas jokes please. New alt and new battery, but doing pretty much the same as before - battery light on, brighter with more revs. But voltage is kinda ok and appears to be charging.
@atfsgeoff Realized my MINI hasn’t been driven in at least 3 weeks so I decided I’m definitely taking it tomorrow. Even put my battery tender on it just in case.
@aestheticsinmotion my V60 is pretty darn nice. I picked it up with 40k miles for $24,000. Dearly needs a manual tho
