They’re all broken… update
-
Well had 3 of 5 cars somewhat broken the other day. Battery in the Volvo dead from not being driven. Spotted a janky looking fuel hose in the Jag after changing the oil. And spotted a coolant leak under the MINI. Shit.
Jumped the Volvo — easy
Fixed the hose in the Jag — easy.
Now my MINI has actually been extremely reliable but I immediately knew it had the same leak they all get — cracked thermostat housing!Somewhere under here
Lies this contraption:
OH JESUS -
@britsnswedes-was-minigti it looks like you reached in and yanked out its still beating heart
-
Thanks, yes this is the look I was going for.
-
@britsnswedes-was-minigti lol
Or FAITALITY! -
Ah yes, the German mantra of, "why use one simple part when three complicated parts will do?"
-
@captdale-is-secretly-british Actually it's a French design isn't it? I'm afraid most cars are going that way nowadays. This one had a pretty good run though, my 2011 clubman failed around 70k, this one made it to almost 100k.
-
@britsnswedes-was-minigti apparently some Peugeots use the n14, curious if they have all the bmw bits though.(lots of the parts have bmw stamped proudly for the various mechanics to see)
-
@sony1492 True dat. This is a 2013 N18. I’ll look what the part is stamped tomorrow.
Seems to me I’ve heard they are more reliable in Peugeot applications but in some cars they’re even more tightly jammed in than the R56
-
@britsnswedes-was-minigti perhaps Peugeot are manufactured their own parts based on the same design.
-
The N18 is in fact the PSA EP6 (also know as the 1.6 THP), it was co-designed with BMW and PSA but it's mainly a BMW design from what i recall and is made by PSA in Douvrin.
This particular part seems to be shared between them : https://www.nomaallim.com/replacing-thermostat-ep6-engine.html
While it has been unreliable at first with the same timing tensioner issues as on the BMW/Minis, it doesn't seem to be that unreliable anymore.
It has been the sole 4 cylinder petrol engine used on PSA cars for something like 10 years in Europe, the other petrol engine being the 3 cylinders 1.2 THP which is based on the same design. -
@jb-boin refer post #3...
-
@britsnswedes-was-minigti KALI MAAAAAAAAA!!!
-
@jb-boin Been lucky with the 3 MINIs I’ve had no major engine problems, and this one is the highest mileage at about 98k. I change the oil and drive it bat-outta-hell.
-
That's one of them fancy electronically controlled thermostats right? Interesting but problem prone from what I've heard.
100k seems pretty good for a thermostat I think. I just changed one on my Jetta at 89k miles. Doing so requires removing the power steering pump and bracket which is tedious. Moreso when you're supplied a faulty thermostat and have to do it twice, the second time taking one from your parts engine with unknown miles.
-
Nice, well this one isn’t a picnic but not that bad. Have to take the intake out and move a bunch of wiring. Then it’s tons of hoses, most somewhat hard to see.
