Next Gen BRZ revealed. Whole lotta MEH
-
It The 2022 BRZ has been revealed. I first saw it on Subaru USA’s IG page. I’m certainly glad there will be a next gen BRZ/86. But man isn’t not a looker. Although I never really liked the look of the first one either.
The overall design is just weird, kinda bland, not at all cohesive. But really that’s just standard fair for a Subaru lol.
100%)
I’m especially not fond of the rear end. I still think it looks like a last gen Buick Regal
Some predictions of the 86 seem like they’ll looks a bit better.
The performance specs are improved up to 228hp which if you ask me should be more than enough. Although I have a feeling I’d be wanting more torque. -
That reminds me a lot of the RX8

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I actually don't mind it at all. Would be better as a liftback but oh well.
-
@dr-zoidberg all FR sports cars 2, or 4 door would be better as liftbacks. The 80s told us that and somehow no one listened
-
@jminer I guess the round front fender and vent behind the rear wheel are a bit evocative of the rx8, but I think the rx8 has much better proportions. Of coarse it’s also a much longer car. Almost a full 10” longer
-
@jminer totally, it seems to have lost a lot of the cab-back-ness. Which is a shame given it's an FR 2-seater
-
I don't mind the blandness so. I thought the old 86 was bland, but I think it's meant to be a bit. The Silvias usually were to, for example. They expect people to modify them if they want to, so it's not too far in either direction from factory.
But I think the proportions are a bit weird, and not as FR as the last one. -
@hfv Mazda even briefly brought it back with the Mazda6 liftback. Buick tried with the last Regal and nuked it. Kia made a good one that no one bought. Now you can get get a liftback that no one can afford in the A/S/RS5s and 7s Sportbacks.
-
@dr-zoidberg It would but I bet they did it for rigidity, that extra connection makes a huge difference.
-
@nauraushaun the proportions looks more like a 370z to me. Kinda tall and pudgy Which I’d say don’t a good thing.
At least the overhangs are short. I like that the didn’t try to make it look longer by just extending it past the wheels -
@hfv here’s some more pics. It does look better from more of a side profile.
The more I look at these the more I think it was designed to have 19,20” wheels. The 17”a look really small, but I’m sure they used a 17” to keep it as more of a budget friendly tuner car. 17” is the cheapest size for performance tiresome and I’m sure Toyota is aware of that. But the big bulging flares and tall stature of the whole car make it seems like it was intentional that’s taller, larger wheel wells meant to accommodate lager wheels -
Meanwhile, the Nissan Z crew is busy working up some exciting new, uh, resumes.
-
@415s30 That is important for people who actually drive and drive in a spirited manner. I just run errands...
-
I like the way the Z looks better. The Subaru just looks too bland. I liked the way the last one looked even if it was pretty subdued but this one is just so generic looking. Rear end looks like an oddly proportioned current NSX which isn't a bad thing. Good looking, but not quite interesting enough for me. I'm sure it will drive fantastic though.
-
@dr-zoidberg exactly. It’s like how my Galant VR4 didn’t have a folding rear seat. Sure it made the chassis stiffer. But it also made it impossible to put a BMX bike in my trunk.
A lift provides that much more practicality, much more than just being able to to fold the rear seats in a coupe or sedan.
Plus I think there is a cool factor that comes along with liftbacks. A 70s 80s retro cool. I think cars need to start incorporating that. We got 60s retro cars 15 years ago. Now where’s the 89s retro cars? -
@hfv Bring back blue interiors!
-
@dr-zoidberg you are a man after my own heart.
Bring back crush velour upholstery while you’re at it. And door locks that go “clunk” really loud, and sea foam green dash lights, and 14” wheels, and low window sills, and really thin sound deadening, And trucks with 2 doors and 3 seats. You can still get 4 people in there if you need to.
Okay I’m rambling -
@hfv For modern pickups with how raked the windshields are I usually think extended cabs are better proportioned. And with clamshell doors they have great access to dry storage without too much incursion on bed length.
-
New brz looks fine. I'm just glad they made it at all. If it drives any better than the old one, it'll be a fucking riot.
-
@dr-zoidberg Yeah, I like the hatch on my Z, I went to Home Depot in that thing.
-
Uhh, I'm not seeing the connection with the Regal at all, and I'm better than many at seeing how one car looks like another.
