The looks sheep give you when you climb up a ladder...

the one ear forward, one ear back is classic sheep body language for confusion or dismay.
Sheepcams are up and running for the winter. Lenses and sensors cleaned, pivots lubed, wifi-signal confirmed, SD-cards wiped and reformatted.

@Jawzx2 Is there a YT channel in your future? I'm thinking there are worse things one could put on as background noise.

That look just says "OH GOD, HE CAN FLY"

I thought it was more a 'one day I'm coming for you' look.
-
@carsoffortlangley We are as gods unto sheep.
-
@ita97 have thought about it. These cameras run on a closed API though, I haven't looked into whether anyone has devised a forwarder/rebroadcaster for them. Also, we have shit internet with only 768k up, so streams would be low quality and we would have to turn them off to use zoom and the like.
-
@jawzx2 What system are you running? Most allow an RTSP stream that you can grab. Not saying you should with your crappy internet, but enterprise Video Systems is a large part of my day job.
-
All I could picture in my head was this........
-
@jminer We use the YI Home (Xiaomi) cameras. They are very surprisingly well built for the cost, and the app "just works". I know some people have made custom firmware for them that turns them into basic IP cameras without the app and a self-hosted web interface, but we like the app for accessing the cameras outside our local network... I should probably look into it more, but haven't bothered.

YI Home
Wow you're right, out the box they don't support either ONVIF or RTSP. If it's working for you now though I'd probably leave it.
-
@jminer The factory software solution is robust and reliable for the advertised functions of the cameras, so we have no complaints. Trying to connect to the camera's IP with a web browser just gets you a "connection refused".
-
Later in the week, this is what the video will show:
-
@jminer oooh, looks like someone has built a firmware that leaves the YI App functionality in tact while adding RTSP, web streaming and etc. hmmm. I may have to install this on my spare cam and see how it works.
-
@jawzx2 fun! Speaking as a guy that likes to buy chinese cameras and load custom firmware on them be careful, these things can be easy to brick.
-
@Jawzx2 Ignorance of sheep-raising question coming in hot.
Do Sheep not grow much wool on their faces/legs? Is a breed thing? Do you keep it knocked down for cleanliness?
-
@sn4cktimes it's a breed thing. Some sheep are wooly all over (only a few breeds), they are great in very cold climates, but if it's muddy, or there are lots of plant burrs, or even if they get the shits, wooly-leg sheep are a pita and they have to have their leg wool shorn frequently. Wool on the face is much more common in sheep, but the breeds we have are both clean faced. The Blue Faced Leicesters additionally have less wool on thier necks than the Border Leicesters (you can usually tell them apart at a distance just by that feature) almost no wool on thier bellies, and less on thier butts. The BFLs are "pre-skirted" in the parlance, in that they don't even grow wool on the areas that usually get thrown away due to contamination.
-
@jawzx2
There was once a bona fide plan for an all puppies cable channel, 24/7. No shit, I heard on NPR once. Also, Spyglass Condos has had the Grand Haven lake cam looking out over Lake Michigan for I don't know how many years now. What I'm saying is, if you broadcast it, they will view. In fact, if there were a way to host it on this site, I'd say we do it.
-
@jawzx2 Thanks for the info. Pre-skirted sounds very convenient but chilly for the sheep. I'm surprised they haven't been bred to have less wool around the butt area if anywhere...
Also, do they have long tails naturally, docked or bred to be stubby?
-
@jawzx2 sheep do not like to be looked down upon, do they?
At least they are unlikely to climb the ladder like a damn goat will!
-
@jawzx2 sheep! Question: black sheep wool: is it less valuable?
-
@sn4cktimes The breeds we have are long-tail, we dock to keep the poop problems to a minimum, but leave them long enough to cover the butthole and vajayjay. There are only a few domestic breeds with naturally short tails, apparently the growth of quality wool is genetically linked to tail length. Wild sheep ancestors and hair sheep have short tails, as do a couple mixed-coat sheep. The Blue Faced Leicesters actually DO have reduced wool on the butt.
-
@cash-rewards Depends. If you're trying to sell to a large wool buyer, black wool will be less valuable because it cannot be dyed as many colors (it CAN be dyed, but the available colors are obviously limited), but if you are selling directly to the consumer there is some cache in "natural" color wool and it may actually be worth more as a specialty item.

@jawzx2 I have learned much Sheep Knowledge today. Thank-you.
