It took many months since it was at a friend's place, but I finally got the roadmaster's 4L60e put back together

so, ama I guess. It was tedious but not impossible. Hopefully the car runs when I reinstall it

The valve body was a pain just because there are so many small parts. The actual clutch packs weren't too bad, just went 1-1 with the replacement clutches.

I also didn't do any of the press fit seals. the 3rd gear clutches were absolutely roasted so I figure this should be good enough!

@rallysanti Nicely done! I'm way to intimated to crack open a transmission - that sort of work gets sent to a shop by me.

@jminer the 4l60/th400 was allegedly an "easy" auto to rebuild. tedious for sure but doable

@rallysanti Is this your first auto rebuild? I took my dear sweet time with my first one. Spent several weeks meticulously disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling. Worth it though! Very rewarding experience, and the car drove great afterwards.

Did you put in a shift kit, or any other mods?

@urambo-tauro yeah. I bought the rebuild kit from summit with upgraded clutches and put in a sonnax shift kit with stiffer springs

How to successfully rebuild a torque converter based automatic transmission, in 3 easy steps:

                1. Remove busted transmission from car
                2. Place transmission in dumpster
                3. Buy a new one at Jegs

@rallysanti kudos for having the stones. I don't.

@mybirdistheword luckily I have a rotating cast of work cars to drive. Roadmaster has been parked since like January, figure it was a good learning experience

@qaaaaa I was honestly considering a manual swap (and still want to) but just want it roadworthy for a while. Seemed like a much bigger hack up to get the manual in place with the extra plumbing (and cost)

Get an aftermarket transmission pan with a drain plug 😎

@rallysanti I'm thinking about a rebuild on the cruiser. It shifts reliably, but harsh and its got 325,000 miles on it. Don't want it to go someplace were it would be bad.

You think DIY rebuilding is doable for a modern transmission?

Who did the press fit seals then?

I would (cautiously) say ...yyyyes. Newer ones might require some more specialized tools, but as long as you can get your hands on them, then yeah anything's doable.

@urambo-tauro Thanks. I might dive in next time out of curiousity if the only option was to junk the unit anyway.
