What Video Game Car Defined Your Youth?
-
As we intermittently plunge in and out of various PHO's and levels of lockdown, I've been playing a fair amount of video games and driving way less. I started thinking about what cars in games impacted me as a kid.
By far and away, the car that impacted me as a 5/6 year old was the Dodge Viper, especially in the iconic Blue with stripes colour. It was, in my opinion, the halo car of the 90's. More iconic than the NSX or any other vehicle.
Gran Turismo
Our PS1 came with one of the demo disks called "Jampack" that included a variety of games, but one of them was Gran Turismo and the only playable car was the blue viper. It was the first driving game that I ever played and I fell in love with the music, cars and tracks.
Twisted Metal
One of the first full games that I got was Twisted Metal III. I had played it at a friends house and wanted it SO badly that I bugged my parents for it for months and got it for Christmas.
One of the characters, Spectre, drove another blue viper with stripes. He was by far my favorite character, and a big part of that was the car. Twisted metal III still probably ranks as one of the games that I've played most in my life and the Twisted Metal franchise was a big part of my childhood.
What games introduced you to cars?

The R33 Skyline from Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo opened a whole new world of cars to me more than just corvettes and mustangs
-
@looseonexit passed any low flying airplanes?
TD was my first driving game too! -
@looseonexit Damn that's a deep cut. 1987 release date!
-
Um....Asteroids?
Probably the only one I can think of that was around at the time, but as an arcade game. Pole Position.
-
Damn I'm old.......

Here's another one from even earlier in life. I didn't respect what it was until I was much older:

@thejwt I can hear the soundtrack now.

My interest in video games was very intermittent throughout my childhood, and into my mid 20's. Every now and then a game would grab my attention hard enough that I'd play it through to the end, but that was the exception rather than the rule. The driving game that grabbed me in middle school, was Top Gear 2 on Super Nintendo. I LOOOOOVED that game!
I sold my Playstation 2 roughly 13 or 14 years ago, and haven't played a video game since.

Yup I'm old. -
If someone wants to lend me a quarter I bet I could still finish it.

It was probably Mario kart although I was more of a Crash Team Racing fan myself. But definitely grand theft auto for me. Either that or OG runescape. Both of those I spent way way way too much time on and that was my entire childhood along with my friends. Then Civilization 3 and Halo 2 consumed so damn much of my time in middle school that I definitely had no life otherwise.

Yup. I'm Team Parsh.

@ibrad Almost went with this but then I remembered Pole Position.

@carsoffortlangley Weirdly I will never forget going through the esses at the end of the front straight on trial mt. clean at 185mph in the Cerbera Lm in GT 2. At the time, there was no better feeling, or game lol.
-
@carsoffortlangley Also, the 328
in Rad Racer.

Sprint2....I remember there were a few arcade consoles in the lobby of the local Kmart. Every shopping trip I’d start hounding my mom for a quarter before we even arrived. I’d always get to play a game on the way out. -
@carsoffortlangley GT was a huge influence, and broadened my scope, but I was already all in before then:
Spent a lot of time in that FW12.

@classicdatsundebate Man, I'm with you. Seeing these guys showing Gran Turismo cars...I'd already been put on academic suspension from college when I first played Gran Turismo.
