Meet The New BRZ
-
Same as the old BRZ. New engine, same basic platform, should be fun.
-
Ha, I was just about to post the same thing!
I think it looks great, and on paper it seems to have improved a lot. Still unsure if I would chose this over an MX-5 as a second car though.
-
Oh thank god I don't have buyers remorse right now.
I'm not digging the styling. Did they steal the tail lights off a civic? And the front end off a Ferrari?
The new engine seems like the old AP1 vs AP2 argument. Since it's a 2.4 though, it will have more overhead when you throw parts at it. I bet headers+exhaust+tune on the 2.0 will be better than the 2.4. -
@jarrett IDK having no torque dip would be lovely. That was truly frustrating when I've driven them.
-
@arch-duke-maxyenko
Awww, Toyota got to make a baby RC F.
-
"Peak torque now comes on at just 3,700 rpm—right around where its predecessor would fall into that famously awful torque dip."
OK, so I might be able to get the feel that I want without modding it? I'll wait and see, but this could replace my GTI in 2022-2023 timeframe.
-
@jarrett I was thinking along similar lines... it's not bad looking, but it does look like they blended a bunch of other cars together.
Front quarter view, depending on the exact angle, I'm seeing 911/Panamera/Beetle.
Rear, I'm seeing NZX.
Rear quarter, I'm seeing WRX/something Lexus. And Aston on the trunk lid.And then there's these two, for some stark contrast.
At the front on this one, I see the melted face of the current Escape.
And this one has a bit of TVR flavour going on, minus the hood slashes obviously. Though it could just be the tail out tire smoke talking there... -
@futurendowner For me, having a nominal back seat makes it more appealing than the MX-5 so that I can have my wife AND my dog in the car. Plus, I don't really want a convertible.
-
They pulled a 350z/370z
-
@arch-duke-maxyenko Ok serious question because it's the most popular topic when it comes to these. If you're trying to drive fast, why are the revs that low? When driven aggressively, the engine lives between 4800 and 7400 rpms. You've only got to pass the dip once from a stop.
It's the old 90's JDM approach. If you want the water to boil, you need to keep the burner on. -
I will say that, having the Eyesight getup in my Outback, seeing that it will be on the auto version means that I would definitely want the manual. My wife is just going to have to re-learn manual driving when I replace the GTI, most likely. (EyeSight is fine and sometimes helpful for a commuter/road trip/family car, but I would not want it on my sporty car as it gets in the way.)
I could do without the doorsill flare things. Overall, the looks didn't really improve.
@Tekamul I found that the BRZ that I've tested felt like a complete dog around town due to the torque dip. Yes, when having fun you keep it high, but that got tiresome even in the course of the test drive. I guess I wanted the sound to be like my old Integra, but it wasn't.
-
Hang on, so the new BRZ might actually be faster than my 12 year old camry? Nice! TBH Im glad, it looks nice, still light so thats great. Looks like cars might be getting nice again, ie the new 400z
Edit: My GF's 2004 Solara is actually the one that could prob hang with the older BRZ, mine is the newer 2008 model and is down on power.
-
@tekamul @Arch-Duke-Maxyenko Time to break out the memes!!
-
Somebody change that car's diaper - it's full.
-
Honestly, I think it looks good, but it really strikes me as a modern take on a 240Z, if Nissan had downsized the 350/370 instead of making the 400Z.
-
@tekamul it’s because when you hit a slow turn that should be a second gear turn and you go to accelerate and NOTHING happens. It is incredibly frustrating
-
Look at dem tail lights.
-
@limitedtimeonly Can you permanently turn Eyesight off? I hate all this 'emergency braking' crap in cars these days....I've driven some with it a few times and twice now (different models, different manufacturers - a friend of the family's newer Subaru Forester, and a newer CR-V with 'Honda Sensing'), both slammed on my brakes for no reason when there was no issue and scared the shit out of me...(luckily going slowly both times, but still)
If I am the driver I want to drive my own damn car, call me old fashioned!
-
@rallydarkstrike To my knowledge EyeSight cannot be turned off, but I also haven't tried. For the most part it does it's job well, but there are times in stop-and-go traffic where it'll intervene when I was still going to stop at least an inch from the bumper of the car in front of me. Actually, it's kind of helpful. But I wouldn't want it in a BRZ, it just doesn't belong.
I have turned off the poor-performing lane-keep feature in my Outback.
-
@arch-duke-maxyenko I'd rather it be NA honestly. But if rather it not look like a slightly melted version of it's former self
-
I'm a fan. I don't want turbo, they fixed the torque dip, and actually worked on some handling which it didn't really even need. I will say though that I think the current design is sleeker and more classy like a Porsche. Now the looks are more downmarket like 370z/Supra as others have mentioned. Still a good look overall though.
I definitely will test drive but I'll be interested to see this vs the next gen Miata for a future DD.
-
@rallydarkstrike you can turn it all off, but it comes back on with every key cycle. So yes, but also no. It's like auto start stop.
-
I quite like the way it looks. It definitely makes sense for someone who wants a fun daily driver. It's more useful than a Miata or 370z because it has a backseat that can be used in a pinch it act as more cargo room. I certainly want one just because it offers eyesight now, which I won't go without due to the amount of driving I do.
-
@hike That would get annoying really quickly....I'd just be turning it off every time I start the car...
-
@arch-duke-maxyenko Sounds like a 1st gear turn, but I can imagine not all situations are covered.
