As a question, how much radio play do Canadian artists get in other countries?
-
@cb Celine Dion and Nickleback is all that comes to mind down here
-
Not much at all. I can't really think of any. Justin Bieber? Haven't heard him on the radio in a while.
-
@cb had a look through a list of musicians and bands on wikipedia
these are the ones i've heard on the radioBryan Adams
Alanis Morrisette
Justin Beiber
Michael Buble
Drake
K D Lang
Avril Lavigne
Alannah Myles
Shania Twain
Gino Vanelli
Bachman turner overdrive
Barenaked Ladies
SUM41as well as the other two in earlier reply, otherwise that's it (that i'm aware of)
-
Looks at the replies:
-
@pip-bip a longer list than I expected for sure.
-
Nowhere near enough Men Without Hats in this post. I am disappoint.
-
I was into Skinny Puppy in high school. There, that’s something you know about me now.
-
In addition to bands already mentioned:
Rush (I considered adding them 28 times to the list) How did everyone overlook Rush???
Max Webster
Loverboy
Prism
Aldo Nova
Walter Rossi
Triumph
Michel Pagliaro
April Wine
Heart (from Seattle, but got their break after moving to Vancouver)
Neil Young (yeah, I know he made it in the U.S.)
Joni Mitchel (same)
Gordon Lightfoot
Tragically Hip (obs)
Rough Trade
Corey Hart
Glass Tiger
Honeymoon Suite
The Pursuit of Happiness
Saga (one of my faves)there's dozens more, I need more coffee. Signed, a musical fanatic from Canada
-
Throwing I Mother Earth into the pile. Technically more of a 90s start though.
-
@jarrett yeah, then you gotta throw Our Lady Peace, Three Days Grace, and Blue Rodeo in the mix too
-
Also The Crash Test Dummies
-
Fuck, how did I miss the Dummies? Probably the only song I can do a decent job, Superman. Need. More. Coffee.
-
@cb They have been around since the 80's, but I doubt many of our southern neighbors know of them.
I'm not sure how to get the video to embed. -
The Box- they wrote a lot of good tunes, most notably L'Affaire Dumoutiers (say to me). Synth heavy but Jean Marc has this weird kinda British lilt to his vocals. I still listen to em
The Payolas- a damned fine band but the recording quality was absolute shit. Sounded like they lay down the trracks on a Radio shack portable recorder
Mahogany Rush- showed lots of promise and got peoples attention with Dragonfly, felt a bit like Santana. They imploded when Frank Marino had the audacity to compare himself to Hendrix.
Man, this thread is fun. I would do odd jobs for neighbors and go downtown Montreal where I'd hit all the audio stores (Audio Center, Laytons, Son Ideal) then bounce around the record stores (Phantasmagoria, Cheap Thrills, Sam's, Rock en Stock, and others). Spend all day and ride the bus home with two new records to check out. Good times.
-
@cb see ya and raise you one. Max with Rush

I'm STILL into Skinny Puppy. (but I worked in the industrial music scene in the 90's... so if anyone knows that about me, this isn't a surprise).

Uhhhhh, that meme I posted is about Rush. That's Alex Lifeson with the guitar and a Ricky-ism referencing the song 'Tom Sawyer'.
-
The meme didn't post in your reply, it sez "Alt text". Interesting fact, Neil co-wrote the lyrics of Tom Sawyer with Pye Dubois => the same Pye that wrote most of Max Webster's lyrics. Dude is weird.
-
@cb it's no patio lanterns or easy to tame, but it will suffice.
