Want an awesome recommendation for a work light?
-
Look no further. Harbor freight, 875 lumen under hood light.
Has two brightness modes, you can use it while it's charging (huge benefit) and has a claimed 7 hour life on low brightness, 3.5 hour on high brightness.
For under $40 and available in store, this is one of my best purchases. No more headlamp, no more scratching my phone using as a work light, and no more dead light in the middle of me trying to wrap up a job I need done tonight.
Highly recommend it. It is awesome.

@jgrabowmst Nice! I have a similar one that was a Christmas present a few years ago. I'm actually using it as a desk lamp in my basement "office," clamped to the rafters.
-
@jgrabowmst That's nice. I'm in love with the Ryobi bendy light
-
@shop-teacher There's some 48" shop lights as well that run on 110, I'm going to get a pair to hang in my shed so I can continue to turn it into a makeshift workshop. I need a decent workbench I can mount a vice to, and I also need a small press so I'm more independent with jobs like wheel bearings.
While Harbor Freight certainly isn't the best stuff out there, I'm a firm believer that treating your tools right goes a long way.
-
@jminer Ugh those bendy lights are really nice, I cannot deny.
-
@jgrabowmst They're definitely more $$ than the one you linked, but it gets constant use both in the garage and the house. I keep dragging one around and my wife is threatening to buy be another for xmas

I can’t tell definitively: does it have a magnet?
-
@jgrabowmst You just have to shop smart there. Some of it is utter garbage, some of it is fine, and some of it is actually pretty dang good! The nice thing is they're super easy to return stuff to, so if you get something that is garbage, you can always get your money back.
-
@jgrabowmst hmmm I'm not sure it'll help

The Ryobi one does not, it has hooks. Unsure on the harbor freight one.

@jgrabowmst It’s too bad the attachment method is via magnets. The Crosstrek’s hood is aluminum. It would still be handy friends’ cars though.
-
@jminer HF is magnetic. Thanks.
-
@boxer_4 The HF light has magnets and also hooks. It also has elastic bands with the ends (the hooks and magnets are together) so if you need to mount to something a little wider, it can stretch fit.
Two of my cars have aluminum hoods, but in the case of the Miata, the hooks are the perfect distance apart to hang right where I need it.
-
@jgrabowmst Thanks for the clarification! This has piqued my interest again.

@jminer Epoxy a magnet on one you like!
-
@415s30 They Ryobi one has a nice base, is pointable and pretty stable. I don’t think I’ve ever really wanted it to have magnets in it. It plus a head lamp has be covered.
-
@jminer As a rigger I have put magnets on a few things, one was a light so I could keep something lit up in the ceiling above the truss, my headlamp only goes where I look. I had one for holding truss bolts and nuts too. Magnet all the things, I have strong ones on all my oil pans now that I think about it.
