#vanlife hot take: everything old becomes new again
-
You know how things go through phases? Like, no one had cassette tapes cause the zune is so much better! Well now guess what they're back. Bell bottoms? In, out, in again, out again.
Minivans out, SUVs in. Now suddenly AWD Siennas are cool. Etc, etc.
So here's the hot take... Overlanding vans are for people who think RVs with a shower and bathroom inside, and real windows, and which are prebuilt for you by a company who specializes in such things are now uncool. RVs will come back to replace the overlanding van. I'm calling it now!

@beefchips What makes that image even better is that they were driving the wrong way down a drive through, presumably so they could order by opening the side door, but also a real jerk live cutting off everyone else.
-
I'm just waiting for the current van life it to go full 70s van life. Too many boring white Sprinters & Transits.

Hell yeah! Mustaches are back in, why not silk shirts and shag carpeting?? (I was never sure if that was referring to the pile, or to what you’d do on it , baby!

@beefchips Wait, hold on. Cassettes are a thing again?
-
@shop-teacher Not in my world they aren't. Unless you're talking about cassette adaptors for old car head units.

Yeah man, if you've got a collection clear the dust off and put 'em on ebay!

It's for people for whom vinyl is too mainstream
-
@beefchips Vinyl is fun but dragging out the record player is a much more tactile experience than putting a cassette in a walkman.
-
@pixel minimalism was a mistake considering that this platter of bland is now the ultimate statement of rich freedom

platter of bland
But it says "Action Van" right on it!
-
@beefchips More like a platter of van
-
@beefchips Wow. I had no idea. I got rid of most of mine years ago, but I still have about a dozen of my favorites. I think I'll just keep them. I still have a working cassette player.
Hmmm ... I actually have a couple extra cassette decks. Are those suddenly worth something?

But this is also perfect minimalism as this example is still MAX CAPITALISM with just a whiff of minimalistic aesthetic. And no movement is successful if it isn't redirecting rich people's money.

To defend this weirdo, it doesn't appear there is anyone else? And I'm guess this is "4th meal" and the restaurant interior is closed because it's late (or because of COVID). And sometimes restaurants get angry about people walking up to the drive through.
And then to attack this weirdo, there's no way they are getting the RV to the window from this side either.
-
@facw If I saw someone dumb and hangry enough to think that might work if just back up and leave.

I'm not 100% sure, because I just did a google image search and grabbed the first ridiculous thing I found... but the weirdo may have been under the influence
-
@pixel If I were to van life, that's how I'd van life.
-
@beefchips The main reasons I'd consider a van over an RV would be that vans will fit in a normal parking space, whereas RVs are gigantic gas guzzlers. And vans can be modified for some off-roading, which could be fun. But I want my own private poop room, I don't want to deal with public restrooms any more than necessary. And living out of either a van or an RV would make it difficult to have any other vehicle in addition to it, which I wouldn't be happy about. I'd rather have an actual apartment or house.

So, I guess you've proved my thesis. Everything old is indeed new again!

I'd check ebay, you never know what comes back around in value. iPods are all of a sudden worth a pretty penny again!

Wait, what? They are? Why? I still have two of those.

Why?
Nostalgia - it's a hell of a drug!
I have a few (I'm a nerd) and have been looking to pick up a couple more. It's also nice to have something to play music that isn't internet connected and you don't get constantly interrupted with notifications on.
