Remember when jeep sold a "comanche eliminator"
-
@onlytwowheels so...Waggoner is out then too?
We’re running out of names.
-
Not yet, because the Donner party do not represent or own the title of wagoneer.
-
@pixel oh man. That guy. He is hilarious. "I'm not racist, I have a black friend"
-
@ranwhenparked yeah more of a grey area on Pontiac but the name is dead for now. A local chrome shop posted a picture of a pontiac hood ornament that was absolutely beautiful as a piece of art the other day.

@whoistheleader yeah they aren't saying it's offensive as much as they are just saying they don't like it, also I had no clue that Mojave was a tribe.
-
@onlytwowheels Donner is not a good name. I adopted a dog in February 1994. A litter of dogs had been abandoned by the side of the road just before Christmas, and the shelter named them after Santa's reindeer. By the time my wife and I got to the shelter, only Donner and Prancer were left. We adopted Donner, but shortened her name to Donna because "Donner" made me think of cannibalism and not reindeer.

Who says the two have to be mutually exclusive?
-
@ranwhenparked I just found out that "Pontiac" was never the name of a tribe, it was the name of a famous Ottawa tribe leader. Never knew that. But it makes it even more hilarious that he was talking about how he has a "Pontiac" girlfriend. It would be like me saying I have a "George Washington" girlfriend.
-
@pixel I probably knew that at one time, but in one ear, out the other
-
@italia I saw a Wagoneer on the road this weekend and I think it's just one of the handsomest cars that ever was made. This particular one is perfect, with the grocery-getting wheels and tyres.
[ E D I T ] Not perfect because raised-white-letter tires. But very close.
-
@ranwhenparked That could be good for sales as well. I imagine it would be good publicity to say that every Jeep (insert tribe name here) sold contributes to someone from that tribe's college education.
-
@dipodomysdeserti at least they get majority approval from tribal leaders. I do love the irony here though.
-
@rusty-vandura A little more yellow, and it could be Dr. Leo Marvin's ride:
-
@ranwhenparked https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maruti_Gypsy does this example work?
-
@fintail I actually like that specimen better, but that image is probably 20 years old and that car looks like it's already been rode hard and put up wet.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch the "my wife's grandpa defense"
-
@ranwhenparked Me too. When someone mentioned it in the thread on Jalopnik I had to go google it, and once I did I felt kinda silly for having forgotten.
-
If I remember history, a Comanche Eliminator is an Apache.
-
@rusty-vandura the way he drove, it sure was!
From the movie What About Bob, which is hilarious. Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray.

The Rankin and Bass version had some very dark themes. I'll have to go back to look for the cannibalism.
-
@dipodomysdeserti I was going to mention that. I'm hoping they drop that with but probably not. Cavalry troops are still regularly nicknamed Apache, Blackfoot, and Comanche.
Somewhat related and no less disturbing, Coloradoans decided to name a railroad town just a few miles from the site of the Sand Creek Massacre, Chivington.

An interesting pairing...
-
Why can't Jeep save face with it's naming? What if they promised to donate 2% of every Cherokee and Grand Cherokee sale to helping Native Tribes across the land? Jeep could start sponsoring Native Culture days and parades across the country.
If Jeep wants to be the "American" brand it's best to honor all folks of America.
-
@italia is it offensive? Or is it the last gasp of representation in our culture? Both?
I could go on, but this thread would get banished to oppopolitics. -
@rusty-vandura it is, but it's hilarious. My family has been quoting that movie for years
