There's only going to be heartbreak and tears. This 2019 Husqvarna Vitpilen, brand new, is still for sale in Stoon. $7500 CAD, because it's $6k off right now. I want it so bad.
You know, I should probably have a chat with my financial advisor before I buy a bike. That seems like a smart thing to do.
-
How are Husqvarna bikes? I like their chainsaws! Seems like a decent deal, I say pull the trigger!
-
@rctothefuture License first! If it's still around in three and a bit months, I guess I can't say no at that point.
-
@cb No no no, ya gotta buy the bike so then you HAVE to get the license. It's a great motivator!
-
@cb These bikes look so amazing, they're pretty much a Duke under there but hot damn they are a looker.
-
@cb Just do it. You'll (probably) be happier that you did
-
@cb the hell with chattin scoop that thing up! That's a fantastic deal
-
@rctothefuture that’s how I did it back in the day. Having a bike sitting in a showroom waiting for me was great motivation to get my Class 6
-
@cb i love the new vitpilen. Shame I'm too big a pussy to buy a motorcycle.
-
@cb Sho is purdy
-
@jminer Exactly, a hot Austrian dressed up in classy Swedish fashion. What's not to like ?
-
@cb
That’s so pretty, and for about tree-fiddy US, how can you not get it? -
@cb I bet if you bought it now they would store it for free till you get your license.
-
Depends on what you want from a bike. These were released on the expensive end so they're having a hard time getting them off the dealership.
Also, you'll almost be pulling the hail mary I did; buying a fresh middle weight without being able to ride it. I put a deposit on the CB650F before I even sat on one as they were a week away when I showed up in late Aug '17.
I haven't ridden one out right but I wasn't super thrilled with the seat when I sat on one at release. I like to sit more "in" a bike rather than "on". And while Husqvarna improved that big KTM single, I don't like riding thumpers or twins so it's a pass for me (I didn't have a good time on the KTM 790 Duke, it was an annoying bike with shitty fueling and a laggy e-throttle).
I'll take anything for a spin but I'm a super picky rider when it comes to what I'll put up with for ownership.

This is a terrible idea, they'll just try to sell you some mutual funds or other boring nonsense.
Buying a new motorcycle is an irrational decision. Sure, some of them are better than others at things like "reliability" and "value" and "fitting within my budget", but if you're buying one for those reasons you're doing it wrong. Figure out whatever one you want, obsess over it until you actually get it, and figure out how to pay for it.... whenever.
If you want a European bike of questionable reliability that looks sweet and is fun to ride, the 701 is a good choice. You could also check out the new Aprilia 660s, which appear to be priced at a $13k CA, or a leftover Tuono for $15k CA. Just watch out for dealer fees on bikes advertised with heavy discounts that push the price back up. Don't forget you will immediately need to spend an extra $2k-ish for an exhaust and ECU upgrade to get rid of the factory one.
-
I dunno if we want to go used Tuono for a first bike though (that being said, I could have started on a S1000R) I think you've doubled his planned budget.
-
@exage03040 More like 2.5x budget after taxes & fees and mandatory parts upgrades, and that's before adding in a new helmet or any other gear.
It's debatable if the superior electronics on new, higher spec'd bikes are helpful more than the extra powahhhh is dangerous. A responsible rider that understands their limits, and is willing to respect both the machine and the laws of physics will be fine on whatever they choose. A moron will be just as dangerous on a 40 hp bike as a 200 hp one, the only difference is how fast they will be going when they splatter against a stationary object.

He hasn't rode yet so even he's not going to be sure what he'd be comfortable with or how much he'll ride. At this point anything litre in his mind is going to be a no go (see the 1100 Rebel topic last week). I'm a bit hesitant to suggest something valued over $10k for a first bike to the vast majority of riders even with confidence and aptitude. Larger bikes sure, expensive... ehhhhhh not really.
Saskatchewan the street riding season is only around 5.5-6mo and I don't believe he's going primary riding over the cage in this time. And just for shits and giggles, Aprilia has no dealerships in Saskatchewan... The closest to him is Edmonton which is some 325mi (525km) away.
-
@exage03040 So you say that it's financially irresponsible, generally irresponsible, impractical, ignores conventional wisdom, rebellious against those with experience, and extremely inconvenient, with limited usefulness.
Those are all selling points!
-
I suppose owning a Aprilia in Saskatchewan would be pretty damn Oppo. I'm sure you could count on your hands how many owners there are in that Province.
-
@cb They're small bikes. Like, I'm 5'10" and it felt like I was on a Grom. Really weird, as I never got that sense from any pictures that I've seen.
Anyway, they're cool as heck.
-
@cb buy it!
-
@cb Very good looking bikes. They feel very old school with the “on top of the bike” riding position. Having a thumper as your only bike might get old, though.
-
@exage03040 I can count on my hands how many people own my bike in Saskatchewan, and I have a Kawasaki. There is 1 2001, 2 2003, 2 2004, 1 2005, 1 2007, my 2009, 1 2010. I've only ever seen two others in person.
