What do you do if you have no room for a subwoofer but want more bass? This.

So it turns out there's 4 inches of space between the "floor" of the wagon and the spare tire tool tray thingy. So, I installed a sub:
Ended up hiding perfectly. It's a 120 watt alpine unit, at 3 inches tall. It's not going to shake the world apart, but it added a lot of low end that really filled out the sound. The rest of the speakers are stock, the only other modification is a Pioneer head unit. Behind the battery there was a grommet through the firewall that had a provision that perfectly fit the power wire, and everything is ran behind the dash and through the door sills. Thankfully the IS is old enough that it's still straightforward to take apart, so overall this was pretty simple. I may move things around a little bit, but I'm pretty happy with this.
Oh wait, you want to actually see the subwoofer.
Cleaned everything up and this is the final result.

@derp I look at the first pic and expect to see a dog sitting on a mexican blanket. OH WELL.
-
@derp I love stealth sound systems.

@derp how much sub could a subwoofer woof if a subwoofer could woof subs?

@EssExTee at least 3

@derp The real question isn't where you put the subwoofer, but what song you played to test it...

@derp Cool install! Generally, those go under the front seat(s) sometimes out in the open somewhere in the trunk because air movement, but if it sounds good enough there and nothing rattles, that is a slick spot.

I also have a factory subwoofer in that same location! It doesn't do shit. This fixes that

@derp I don't know the details on this thing but it can get quite thumpy if I turn it up on say The Beds Too Big Without You.

@derp Counterpoint, start with a 7 passenger vehicle
This is what my neighbor has been working on in his spare time this summer on his spare vehicle. Two 19s and two 12s, plus component speakers in the doors. Now that his wife's car is down this has to get done so she has something to drive. Thanks for posting a reason for me to share this ridiculousness.

@derp Nice! They add a surprising amount. I went with the Kicker 10 inch 160 watt unit and I'm very impressed with the power.
I put mine on a bracket I found on the forums to hide into the factory location.
This is the old CV that died.

@derp I was looking at self contained amp/subwoofers for the Miata. Wondering if I could find one slim enough to fit under the seat. There are some really compact 8" options, but theres not a much for space under there.
I think I'll just try to find a good set of the original Bose door speakers which are a woofer/mid built into one unit.
woofer underneath
mid on top -
@Green-Truck Thats some WMDs Woofers of Mind Destruction.
Cant hear shit and everything you see is vibrating.

@derp That's basically exactly where the factory subwoofer is on the E350 wagon:
(not my photo) -
@derp Do what BMW does and put them under the seats
-
Nicely done. I have been eyeing the void in the center of my underfloor tool tray and wondering if this was an option.

Updated og post with cleanup pictures
-
@derp that floorboard is gonna be all about that bass.
-
@chan it actually doesn't rattle at all. I thoroughly tested it at...unadvised volumes. Wife was outside the vehicle, no vibration/rattles outside either.
Really happy with how it turned out.
