Miata is having troubles, back to car shopping again.

the older CX5
The aforementioned Mrs. addiction's CX-9 drives quite nicely as well.
I sure hope Mazda engineers get the chance to build another sports car or sporty sedan again, besides the next Miata, and not just more and more crossover SUVs.
-
@Finnish-Insider Dont want to hate on VW, but the idea of putting a 100k on one scares me.
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold @drVanTraveler Obviously dont need it but I road tripped a GC and a Wrangler with it and found it useful. Turning the cruise on and off for hours is kind of annoying and it smoothed that out imo. Plus it seems rude to spend all that money and not get it thrown in when its standard on cheaper cars.
@AestheticsInMotion Because of a diff?! The rest of the car is still going strong enough (knocks on wood).

loses speed right before I want to change lanes to pass someone. I did adjust the follow distance thing..
Yeah, you definitely have to adjust your lane change behavior to well before you would in an older car, even with the shortest follow distance set.
I worry about young drivers who learn on cars with these systems who then find themselves in a older car without it. My little brother actually had a minor "oh shit" moment on the highway in a newly purchased car of theirs because of this.
Our brain quickly learns the "new normal" and forgets the old ways, if we allow it.

@Milky Now that I've driven a handfull I cant understand how or why any one is paying 50k for a Wrangler.
They are at best a silly noisy toy car, and at worst an annoying rattle trap. Which would be find if they were cheap. but they are FAR from it. -

This. Our CX-5 is a 2016 with close to 97,000 miles and itβs still a hoot to drive. Feels as solid as ever, too.

They are at best a silly noisy toy car, and at worst an annoying rattle trap. Which would be find if they were cheap. but they are FAR from it.If I lived somewhere with lots of dirt/gravel roads and trails AND really nice, dry weather, I could make a case for Wrangler as a DD. But the fact that they're everywhere is just crazy to me. I used to think it was because they were cheaper than average cars (which would make perfect sense when you look at them, study their history, understand construction techniques, etc) but man was I mistaken...
I walked the Carmax lot with my 13yo yesterday and you should have seen the look of disappointment when he got into a '21 Gladiator Overland and looked up at the hardtop and tapped on it. $52k. When you're disappointing a pre-teen boy with a Jeep, something is wrong.
My take is there might come a day when Wranglers drop by 30%+ (which is still probably better profit margin than most cars unless they're doing something very wrong on the business side). But I'm holding the line until that day comes. And everyone else needs to do the same or it will never work
-
@Milky My girlfriend has a CX50 and it's pretty nice. I like how it drives and rides.
-
@Milky I've recently driven a CX-50 (non turbo). It was a pleasant experience. It was $32k MSRP at the not-quite-base trim. If you want that Zircon color, I believe that's the top turbo trim only, which starts at $42k.
I'm gonna vote for the IS anyway because I am required to do so
-
@HFV_Junkyardin People like toys
, I daily drive a miata with a soft top through Michigan winters so dont look to me for reasoning.
-
@Dr-Zoidberg Really what I want is a not all black interior and turbo, which would be $39k. But the meridian trim does have more sidewall.
Also, Im still mad the IS500 is expensive andhasn'twont depreciate. -
@Milky I'd rather daily a Miata... and am doing that.
My Miata doesn't sound like it has a bucket full of action figures bouncing around in the back every time I run over a small bump. -
@HFV_Junkyardin Why not both?
I get your point but Wranglers aren't rational purchases. I like the idea of one because I miss the XJ I had, would really like some defense since the Miata has been hit 4 times, plus it would be much better in the snow and I could goto the dunes once a year.
Is that worth the general annoyance of daily driving one? TBD honestly -
@Milky I would daily a Wrangler...actually I did for a while. 05 rubicon with a 4" lift and 33s. The ride wasn't an issue for me but the fuel consumption was.
Now I drive a really long Wrangler that does everything an older wrangler does but better (except trails because length) and I love it. I don't need it but I want it, and I have to drive something I want or I'll waste a bunch of money getting something I want.
-
@Milky you ain't wrong for feeling that way, pal. haha
-
@Milky Or just like, change the diff. Takes like two hours

My GR Corolla advanced cruise slows down for sweeping curves, and that's just silly. Might be ok for panicky crossover drivers, but not on the GRC.
There is a setting you can adjust to reduce or eliminate curve slowdown during cruise. Found that while exploring the menu options in @BigXSEnergy's Camry.
-
@Finnish-Insider said in Miata is having troubles, back to car shopping again.:
Even the older CX5 had handles that would make other crossovers blush.
A few years ago I absolutely roasted the brakes on a rental CX5 after briefly forgetting what I was driving. Fortunately the brakes are as good as the rest of the handling (well, they were before that).

Welp, you are correct! It is fairly buried in digi dash settings, but I finally got there after digging in the manual.
Thanks! -
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold I don't think I'll have an issue driving it, just being honest about how much/far I drive and wandering steering wont help. For me though the 2 door felt like the perfect size. Versus the CX50 which had a big back seat and trunk, would be perfectly happy with either, instead of both.
But yea getting something I want is why im looking so hard at them, worried about getting bored in something else. -
@Qaaaaa Oh for sure, this is just making me realize I cant drive the Miata forever.
-
@Milky Can speak to living with a 2 dr Jeep, mine was a poverty spec / manuel / soft top tho and cost ~$20k less. Have been considering another as well.
With the lower base model suspension and little tires, steering is still crappy, everything over 45mph is crappy, wind noise is atrocious.
It's wonderful as a city car, honestly one of the best on the market. Perfect for parallel parking, hopping curbs, and doing u-turns. At low speeds the suspension and steering are great.
Oil changes are super easy, didn't own mine long enough to need anything else.
There should be a bunch on lots, but they're all autos since the manuel is on stop-sale. The 2.0t drives better than the V6, unclear on long-term reliability.
If you're serious about buying one, do so thru one of the dealers offering a discount thru a forum. Even if you change your mind and sell in 6-12 months, it won't lose much value.
-
@nermal The hard top with pad inserts on the rental I had seemed quieter then my miata FWIW. Which is something I want. Also watched reviewers say the 2L's torque is better for normal life, but yea the reliability is a concern for either (looking at coolminivan's post).
City driving is certainly a selling a point though, seems like it'd be easy to live with in town.
-
@Milky Yeah, if you're looking to go with something bigger, the CX50's your obvious winner, there.
-
@Milky Not with that attitude!
