Miata is having troubles, back to car shopping again.

Took 7 years and 141,000 miles but the first mechanical problem has happened. The diff is making a terrible noise. Presumably that is, still working out getting is diagnosed since my normal oil change spot doesn't do that and the local driveline place doesn't work on foreign cars (what year is this?). Any who have a couple of other leads to call on, but since I meant to take this car off daily driver duty a while ago, started test driving again.
Drove a V6 IS not that long ago and its still a front runner for a comfy dependable car to along side the Miata. But also wanted to try out some bigger bois. Sooo
Ohh man was the steering bad. Its a Wrangler with knobbly tires, no shock, but notably higher effort then the highway tire-d 4 door I drove for a week and liked. Also worth noting that barely any seem to actually have the advanced cruise control optioned, even the $52k(!) example I test drove. Seems to be standard on '24 cars, but oofta at ordering one right now.
Something I do like though is that a CPO example would come with a 100k mile powertrain warranty, which would give me some piece of mind going to mopar.
Took this around the block too and it steered great? Handle better then it had any reason too, but in the end that means it drove like a good car and didn't leave me with any emotion. Plus the interior wasn't that nice, good but not great. In the end its a mid size crossover so I shouldn't be surprised.I gotta get my car fixed still and definitely going to have all of this rummaging around the back of my head for a while.

@davesaddiction For real though. Besides being a bit "heavy" I dont know why all cars cant have steering like that.
$42k fully loaded isnt half bad either. -
@davesaddiction Ditto on the Cammisa verdict. Even the older CX5 had handles that would make other crossovers blush.
@Milky the newer Tiguan's are truly alot of car for the money and on a short list for potential daily replacement for me in the future.

@Milky I don't understand the love of advanced cruise control. Inevitably I'll end up following someone who can't keep a consistent speed which is far more annoying than having to control my own speed.
I optioned my gladiator without it. Or, more to the point, I bought one that did not have all the sensors. For many replacing bumpers is an early modification and getting one with all the sensors in the right places is not as easy.

I really don't either. I've driven with it on the highway, and found that it loses speed right before I want to change lanes to pass someone. I did adjust the follow distance thing..
My GR Corolla advanced cruise slows down for sweeping curves, and that's just silly. Might be ok for panicky crossover drivers, but not on the GRC.Update: There is a setting in the Toyota dash stuff that allows me to eliminate curve speed reduction, thanks to @atfsgeoff for pointing this out. I am still not up to speed on all this over-complicated dash stuff.

The aforementioned Mrs. addiction's CX-9 drives quite nicely as well.
I sure hope Mazda engineers get the chance to build another sports car or sporty sedan again, besides the next Miata, and not just more and more crossover SUVs.

@Finnish-Insider Dont want to hate on VW, but the idea of putting a 100k on one scares me.
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold @drVanTraveler Obviously dont need it but I road tripped a GC and a Wrangler with it and found it useful. Turning the cruise on and off for hours is kind of annoying and it smoothed that out imo. Plus it seems rude to spend all that money and not get it thrown in when its standard on cheaper cars.
@AestheticsInMotion Because of a diff?! The rest of the car is still going strong enough (knocks on wood).

Yeah, you definitely have to adjust your lane change behavior to well before you would in an older car, even with the shortest follow distance set.
I worry about young drivers who learn on cars with these systems who then find themselves in a older car without it. My little brother actually had a minor "oh shit" moment on the highway in a newly purchased car of theirs because of this.
Our brain quickly learns the "new normal" and forgets the old ways, if we allow it.

They are at best a silly noisy toy car, and at worst an annoying rattle trap. Which would be find if they were cheap. but they are FAR from it.(Speedy Speed Boy woa oh woa oh)

This. Our CX-5 is a 2016 with close to 97,000 miles and it’s still a hoot to drive. Feels as solid as ever, too.

But the fact that they're everywhere is just crazy to me. I used to think it was because they were cheaper than average cars (which would make perfect sense when you look at them, study their history, understand construction techniques, etc) but man was I mistaken...
I walked the Carmax lot with my 13yo yesterday and you should have seen the look of disappointment when he got into a '21 Gladiator Overland and looked up at the hardtop and tapped on it. $52k. When you're disappointing a pre-teen boy with a Jeep, something is wrong.
My take is there might come a day when Wranglers drop by 30%+ (which is still probably better profit margin than most cars unless they're doing something very wrong on the business side). But I'm holding the line until that day comes. And everyone else needs to do the same or it will never work

@Milky My girlfriend has a CX50 and it's pretty nice. I like how it drives and rides.

@Milky I've recently driven a CX-50 (non turbo). It was a pleasant experience. It was $32k MSRP at the not-quite-base trim. If you want that Zircon color, I believe that's the top turbo trim only, which starts at $42k.
I'm gonna vote for the IS anyway because I am required to do so

@Dr-Zoidberg Really what I want is a not all black interior and turbo, which would be $39k. But the meridian trim does have more sidewall.
Also, Im still mad the IS500 is expensive andhasn'twont depreciate. -

I get your point but Wranglers aren't rational purchases. I like the idea of one because I miss the XJ I had, would really like some defense since the Miata has been hit 4 times, plus it would be much better in the snow and I could goto the dunes once a year.
Is that worth the general annoyance of daily driving one? TBD honestly -
@Milky I would daily a Wrangler...actually I did for a while. 05 rubicon with a 4" lift and 33s. The ride wasn't an issue for me but the fuel consumption was.
Now I drive a really long Wrangler that does everything an older wrangler does but better (except trails because length) and I love it. I don't need it but I want it, and I have to drive something I want or I'll waste a bunch of money getting something I want.

A few years ago I absolutely roasted the brakes on a rental CX5 after briefly forgetting what I was driving. Fortunately the brakes are as good as the rest of the handling (well, they were before that).

Welp, you are correct! It is fairly buried in digi dash settings, but I finally got there after digging in the manual.
