Which used iPhone model should I buy?
-
For Mrs. Vandura for Christmas. She's using a 7. An iPhone X is a comfortable price point for me.
-
@rusty-vandura I and my boys are still happily rocking iPhone 8’s. Mrs Ttyymmnn is still using an iPhone 6. I think a X would be relevant for a while.
-
@ttyymmnn Missus currently uses a 7 which for some reason has never allowed pictures to come entirely into focus.
-
If you can swing a refurbished XS instead of X, they definitely worked out some of the first model issues by then, but a X would definitely be a nice upgrade from a 7.
-
I have had an X for three years, have to recharge it every six hours. Wife has an 11, some subtle differences that are worth paying for (and, you get a new battery).
-
Does she want to stick with the smaller form factor? The new SE is the same size as the old 'regular' size 6-8 phones.
The new 12 mini is also the same form factor, but uses the full-screen architecture along with the new sharp-edged design.
-
My XR hasn’t given me a moment of trouble in the 2 years I’ve been using it.
-
@rusty-vandura I’ve had an X for a bit over 2 years now and it’s been great.
-
I got a XR, and am very happy with it. We got my MIL a new SE, and that’s working great for her. The SE is a great price point in an up to date phone, especially for someone who isn’t a “power user”.
-
Agree with others Xs or XR depending on which size she prefers.
-
@chariotoflove How's battery life on the SE?
-
No personal experience but the XR/XS seem to be a step up from the X. Have heard things about battery life and interface weirdness from a friend with an X. We got my wife an 11 128GB model last Xmas to replace her 6. It was quite the upgrade (though it's pretty big in size), but may not be in the budget. It is very nice if you can stretch or maybe get a lightly used one from somewhere. The 12 tanked the 11 resale so they aren't horribly priced. The SE also makes a good option. I am still rocking a 6S and have not been looking forward to replacing it from a pricing standpoint.
-
@rusty-vandura I've had an SE for 3 months (replaced my 7), and the battery life has been the best of any iphone I've had. Though, granted, it's only my third.
-

Really good. More than a day, depending on how much you use it.
-
@Rusty-Vandura I've had an 8 for over two years and it is still going strong. Battery still lasts all day and it takes remarkably good photos.
-
I really like the X the main reason is the full screen that you don’t get from an SE or iPhone 8. Don’t discount a Samsung as they are much more horse power for the money.
-
iPhone 6s or 6s Plus

@rusty-vandura Ive seen quite a few recommendations to step up to a XS and I feel like I need to let you know to do your research on iPhone XS cellular radio issues.
Apparently Apple went with Intel instead of Qualcomm modems for the XS and they perform quite poorly.
I can personally attest to this. I have a XS on TMobile (actually I've had two). I had to have the first replaced under Apple care because my signal was so poor, and CONSTANTLY had poor or no signal when things loaded just fine on my wife’s iPhone X. The second one is better but is still prone to being slow or losing signal when other phones on TMobile are performing fine.
I’m sure this isn’t everyone’s experience, but it’s been highly irritating for me, and if I hadn’t been WFH since March I probably would have replaced it already.
-
Pretty happy that this post occurred tonight as I just broke my X and swapped the SIM into my old 6S that really needs a battery. Planning to go test drive an 11 tomorrow. I’ve always bought the outgoing model. The X was fine but the fact that all have back glass now is unfortunate. I hate cases and had not needed them until I bought the X. Still, cases can’t save everything.
-
@jeepoftheseus as in, broke my phone and swapped to the back up all while this was being posted.
-
@looseonexit This talk of SE... On Swappa, the only thing SE that I can see is old, like iPhone 5 vintage.
-
@rusty-vandura just got one of the new 12-mini. I’m liking it a lot. My 8 got dropped constantly because of the rounded edges.
-
@rusty-vandura the old SE was iPhone 6S guts in a 5 casing. It’s a great choice if you like smaller but a bit old at this point.
There’s a new SE that came out somewhat recently but I’m really liking my new 12 MINI that just came out. -
Like was mentioned above there’s two SE’s, the original that’s super old and the 2nd Gen that came out in April. It’s still available new from Apple, but there are some used ones out there as people step up to the 12 Mini. The new SE form factor is similar to the 6-8 with better guts.
-
@rusty-vandura There is a new SE that just came out, I just swapped my 7 for one. It's basically an iPhone 7 form factor with a lot of iPhone X guts. Battery life is the best of any iPhone I've had so far.
I traded in my iPhone 7 and I think it was $270 after trade direct from Apple? We get a 10% discount which I think teachers get as well. Here's the link to the new SE: https://www.apple.com/iphone-se/
