Got a new ergonomic mouse!
-
I have to say I really like using it! I use a computer all day everyday for CAD, so I could justify the $60 premium (the Logitech MX Vertical actually costs about $100 from retailers, but I was able to get one in a slightly damaged box off of eBay for $60).
I actually tried out this mouse from Walmart before going for the Logitech. It's not bad! And it let me know that a vertical mouse is for me. It's pretty cheap though and after a day of using it I knew I wanted the Logitech. Maybe it's all in my head, but I think I definitely feel less strain using the vertical mice. Even if it is in my head, I'm sure the better posture will be worth it over time, I don't really see my career changing away from using a computer all day, but who knows? Good to get in the good habits early.vThe plan is to keep the Walmart mouse at home, and the fancy Logitech at work.
Left: New Mouse, Logitech MX Vertical | Center: Shitty Stock Mouse | Right: Onn Vertical Mouse (Walmart)
Both mice are much better than the free Dell Mouse that came with my old laptop. I had been using it for years insisting that it was fine until I met the old Logitech M705 at my work computer. Going to miss using that one, but it is pretty worn out (and apparently the new M705 doesn't have a programable thumb button, which was the best part!).
I also cross shopped with the Logitech MX Master 3, which has a lot of fancy features and ergonomic benefits over regular mice, but I figured if I was going to use a special mouse it might as well be as good as it can for me. I also considered the trackball, but I heard that they're tricky with dual screens.
Now all I need is an ergonomic keyboard and some blue light glasses and I'll be surfin New Oppo as safe as possible.

Username checks out.

@slant6 Logitech makes kickass stuff IMO. I wouldn't buy anything else. I recently replaced my aging gaming keyboard and mouse with new logitech "G" stuff and wow. So nice. Their webcams are OK too.

@jb-boin Leaning tower of...productivity!
-
Some of my coworkers have crazy gaming mice with ergonomic features and a bunch of buttons to which they map macros to make things quicker, etc. Me? I'm left handed so it's an M310.
-
I've used these since they came out with them, I've had four I think, they last a pretty long time. I hate having to move my hand around a pad.
-
@415s30 They make a newer version of that one now, I looked into it but heard it didn't do well with multiple screens. I really want to try one though. The vertical mouse I have does have limited physical travel when used, at least they advertise that, I'm not sure how it works out though.
-
Trackball M570 or GTFAC! I have two, one for my personal computer and another from work. My oldest one has been trucking along now for 5 years of getting thrown in a backpack through college and work.
-
@slant6 I haven't been able to use a non-ergo keyboard in years and use ergo style mouses but wasn't quite sold on that style. I use a mix of a MX Master 2 and a G602 depending on where I an and like them both, the Master is a little nicer as it's bigger and I have giant mitts.
Let us know how you like it.
-
@bandit how well does it work for you between multiple screens? I hear they're tricky rolling across that much space. That was the main thing that made me go vertical over something like the MX Ergo, which is the fancy new trackball. I also really like having a programable function key, which the vertical has.
-
@jminer Will do! After a week of Walmart mouse I really like the hand position of a vertical mouse, my hand is in kinda a loose "pinch" position, like I'm conducting an orchestra. Very comfortable, not sure if I'd ever go back. The Walmart one isn't bad for $20, also no Logitech, but I'm looking forward to using it for light stuff at home.
Any ergo keyboard recommendations? I'm hesitant to buy one since it would be much more cumbersome to shuttle back and forth to work. I'd feel silly dropping all the money on one to keep at work all the time. I also really like my small Mac keyboard at work because I can push it out of the way to draw or review larger drawings without accidentally pressing keys.

Hah! I developed pretty bad wrist pain after playing Minecraft for hours during quarantine and had to get one of those as well! It's nice that there's finally a semi-premium vertical mouse, although I am annoyed that Logitech didn't fit it with the free-spinning "Momentum" scroll wheel as that's something I really enjoyed from my MX Anywhere 2. The DPI switch is quite nice, though, and I am infinitely thankful for the forward and back buttons.
-
@amoore100 the dpi switch is nice, but the first thing I did was remap it to task view (show all windows). I got so used to being able to do that with my m705 I couldn't go back to not having it. That was my largest complaint with Walmart mouse.

@slant6 The one I've gone back to over the years is the Microsoft 4000 ergo keyboard. It's corded USB, and isn't too radical an ergo but is comfortable for long typing sessions. They're pretty durable and I only have to buy one ever ~7 years. I actually wore the printing off the keycaps. You can usually find them on sale for $30. A longer key throw and they're loud(ish) even though it's non-mechanical. It is a good keyboard to type on a lot on
I do also have their Sculpt wireless keyboard (work bought that) and while the wireless is nice I have moved away from it. The separated 10 key uses an annoying coin cell battery that is always dead when I need a 10 key and it's like typing on a laptop chicklet keyboard but in ergo. If you want a small wireless ergo keyboard though it's great, you can usually find just the keyboard for $70 on amazon.
Logitech has a new wireless included 10 key ergo keyboard but it's expensive and I like my old 4000.

I fidget with that scroll wheel on the anywhere 2 constantly!
-
@slant6 I had the newer one and it is also wireless so you have to deal with batteries. I don't really need wireless so I found a refurbished corded one because they stopped making them with a cord! Anyway I got it and I love it.
-
@bandit I just got a refurbished corded version, I love them.
-
@slant6 I use a TV and my screen, it's fine, you just set it for faster or whatever in the settings and wooosh its fine.
-
@Slant6 this sounds awesome! I have a (cheap amazon) trackball mouse right now and like it, but think this might be more my speed.
-
@amoore100 I do wish it had a tilt wheel. I have that on my M705 and it was really handy for side scrolling when zoomed into an architectural drawing. Wasn't a deal breaker though. I actually got very close to buying an MX Master 3, I carried it halfway through Best Buy before taking it back and deciding I didn't need to spend $100 on a mouse. Yes, it has more features and would be more useful, but comfort is king.
-
@slant6 I feel your pain.
I tried vertical mice and they were better but it was the mouse button action that caused the pain. I even tried an air mouse!
Roller Mouse lets me click with a lot more variation like base or side of the thumb or other fingers. It was the only one that allowed me to keep working.
-
Funny enough I picked one up on Prime day to use up a $10 credit. I've been using the Anker wireless ones but... well you get what you pay for. I like the Logitech and hope to get one for my home PC (I put it on my work one because I use it more). I feel like it is slightly too big and very much too expensive, but otherwise solid. Oh and I wish they'd put a frictionless scroll wheel in it. I love that on my MX mice...
-
@slant6 I have no problems with it at all. For work I use my trackball across three 24" screens and have never had an issue. You can also set the sensitivity of the ball so you can make the cursor move a ton for very little thumb movement if that's what you want.
-
@slant6 Have you tried any of the 3d connexion mice? My CAD professor has one and says he hardly uses it over a regular mouse.
-
@slant6 So more like Slant60, then?
