Attended a race, I have 1907 photos to sort through

Panning is hard; I've already deleted ~240 shots. Here's the first one I'm somewhat pleased with:
I have 1600 left to look at but that's a task for tomorrow. @Photography

@DasWauto Work flow, work flow, work flow. Assuming most are the same lighting, create & save one preset. Cull them, & apply that preset with minor adjustments. I go away from events with 7000-8000 shots in a day, & have them all done within 1-2 days.

@DasWauto yeah i do the same lol but some of my photos from IMSA are good enough I put them as my computer background!
Didn't use my DSLR at Watkins last month but I will at Lime Rock this month.

Meanwhile, on my desk.....
Panning is hard, and I've started practicing it on my airplane shots. This was taken at 1/125 with a 200mm lens. Definitely a bit of sharpening in post, but I also don't have to pan as quickly as you do since my subject is larger and much farther away. But when it comes together, I really like the effect. Hyphen dumbs down the photo; you can see the full size here.

@The-Crazy-Kanuck-Saab-Story I only spent about 15 minutes starting cull them last night after I got them off the card. I’m lucky I didn’t shoot a lot more because I used 96GB of my 128GB card and I didn’t have a spare on me, which is extra dumb because the camera has dual card slots. I’ve got extra cards but I they’re slower/lower capacity so I’ll grab another speedy 128 or 256GB card this week.
I’ve got a preset that should work for most of what I’ll deem worth editing, which’ll probably be around 50 photos. I’ll finish my quick cull and a second pass to choose my favourites to edit this afternoon or tonight.

@ttyymmnn That’s a nice shot. Are you using a tripod when you’re panning? I had mine with me but I was using it more as either a counterweight on the bottom of the camera to steady it, or as a monopod by keeping the legs together. I’m probably gonna pick up an actual monopod though, because fiddling with all 3 legs is annoying if I’m using it that way.
I definitely got better results when I was shooting at the long end of my 70-200mm because I didn’t have to be as fast with my panning. I was experimenting with settings anywhere between 1/50 and 1/250 and even the latter can deliver motion blur with the speed and proximity of these cars. It’s a fun challenge to get good shots.

Thanks. No tripod, and I'm also standing on the top of a three-step step ladder to keep the airport fence out of my shot. I also use one-shot focus rather than servo focus, even though the latter is supposed to be for moving objects. I have found that "pulling my eye back" from the viewfinder, not physically but mentally, allows me to see the whole frame and not focus on the subject. Then I keep the plane (or whatever) inside the box as it's going by. Not a great explanation, I know. I stay away from power shutter as well, and just squeeze three or four single frames. I usually get one or two that are usable. But again, you are much closer to your subject, so you have a lot more distance to pan in a shorter time.

@DasWauto Were you at the Mosport race? Great race, shame it ended under caution.
-
@UpCreekwithShitPaddle Yep, I’ve been before but it’s worth repeating, what a great venue. The hillsides make for great viewing and lots of photo opportunities, even without press access. I didn’t see the last incident as I was in between screens at the time but from talking to a few people in the crowd and seeing the car afterwards in the paddock it seemed like a pretty nasty hit. I haven’t found a replay to watch yet either, unfortunately.

@DasWauto Yeah I was there circa 2012 for the old ALMS race. Stayed in a tent for like 4 days on the inside of turn 3.
The crash is pretty gnarly. Skip to 11:25

@UpCreekwithShitPaddle “the uploader has not made this video available in your country”.
I found another upload now though and yea, that could’ve ended worse. The tarmac runoffs are all well and good but I did think to myself yesterday that there are some potentially very dangerous spots around this track. The walls are low if a car were to go airborne at some spots it could end up in the crowd pretty quickly, especially on the back straight down to turn 8. Not a lot of people there, but even less protection.I can only hope that never happens but it’s probably for the best that no open-wheel classes run there. Running bikes around there is pretty batshit to me too. The superbike weekend is in August and I kinda want to go see the madness for myself.
