Ford's new Ranger.
-
Ford have been at it again.
New models within vehicles. While we had the Ford Ranger before the U.S., the top spec was the Wildtrak.
Then after North America came online with the current Ranger, Ford added the Raptor to the line up.
Now Ford Europe has added the Thunder to the range.
2.0 EcoBlue 210bhp, auto only.
-
Not gonna lie if we got a Ranger Raptor here in the US and they stuffed the 2.7L in there I would probably replace my F-150 Raptor with one just because the F-150 is too wide for a lot of the trails here.
-
@fttohg My future FIL recently got a new Raptor, only ridden in it, but it feels massive.
-
@svend I wonder why the old Sport Trac didn't sell well. Was it ahead of its time?
-
@e90m3 it has good mirrors which helps... except when they are folded in to avoid catching tree branches. I’ve gotten pretty used to the size though and it isn’t really an issue on the street. I do still pretty much always back it into parking spaces because it’s easier to put between the lines with the camera. My wife doesn’t drive it as much and the size still makes here really nervous.
-
@classicdatsundebate We never got the Sport Trak here in the U.K.
But according to the internet, it was dropped in 2010 due to fuel prices and recession saw drop in demand. -
@svend Yeah the new Ranger gives me a strong Explorer Sport Trac vibe.
-
Has anyone cross-shopped the Ranger an the F150? I want to like the Ranger, but I'm so spoiled on space with the F. The inside is enormous.
-
Just no interest from me as a 4 door cab. For a truck I want 2 seats, or a bench. I've got cars for more butt scenarios.
-
@sn4cktimes
Unfortunately North America doesn't get the two door, two seat Ranger.
-
@classicdatsundebate It makes me wish we got the Everest SUV version of it as a spiritual successor to the first two Explorers that were actually kind of rugged. That would sell well as a smaller alternative to the 4Runner and other rugged lifestyle SUVs with real capability. The current Explorer is not at all off road focused.
-
@svend I understand why though. No one would buy them. I like my modern trucks as extended cabs anyways (not quad cab) for the clamshell doors so they sell the specs I would want (minus the Raptor version)
-
@whoistheleader None of the SUVs or crossovers offered here are all that rugged or capable off road.
-
@svend Most of those aren't even SUVs. The Kuga/Escape and Mach-E are road focused CUVs and the Puma is an oddly proportioned hatchback. The Ecosport is the only one that really seems to have more utility than a hatchback and it's also terrible.
We get some much larger SUVs over here including the Expedition, Explorer, Edge, and Bronco plus the wretched Ecosport plus some Lincoln versions.
They should have brought the Everest over here while they were at it. It's basically the same vehicle so a lot of the work is already done. I think it would sell very well as a rugged lifestyle vehicle as Ford has a Wrangler competitor but not a 4Runner competitor.
-
@whoistheleader In Europe the Ecosport and Kuga are SUVs.
It's that different classification we talked about at length on the other OPPO regarding pickups, etc... between North America and Europe. -
@svend I'd say that if it is transverse based and on the smaller side, it's a CUV and three row transverse based or any longitudinal is an SUV. It's not exactly cut and dry though. You could poke holes in that as it's not as widely accepted as everything with a bed being a truck. The current Escape is definitely in the CUV category here as it's much shorter on utility.
These are absolutely SUVs, especially as they're longitudinally based RWD/4WD.

@svend said in Ford's new Ranger.:
@sn4cktimes
Unfortunately North America doesn't get the two door, two seat Ranger.
Daaaaaaaamn. Can even get it sans box?!? I don't like that rear deck, I'd fab my own. But not having to pay for the ass end of a truck I'd immediately toss sure would be nice.
-
@svend because they know it would cut out the F150 sales... by a LOT!
-
@sn4cktimes we can certainly get them without the tub or tray...in most lower grades of all cab and driveline variants. If you choose the factory tray option on the cab chassis like in those images it usually comes out only a couple of hundred cheaper than the tub.
-
@SilentbutnotreallyDeadly Can always sell the rear and tailgate to body shops as well. They tend to go through a few a year. So much easier to change the entire box than a panel.
-
@whoistheleader Again, I think what I said last time was, 'if the makers want to call it a pickup, it's a pickup', here, if Ford want to call their vehicles SUVs and crossovers, then they are SUVs and crossovers. Lol.
What is classed as a crossover, a CUV or SUV in Europe would be different to what North America calls them.
Just like what we call pickups and what you call trucks. -
@sn4cktimes that's no longer much of an option down here. Sometimes, the dealer will take it off your hands if you really want a top spec without the tub but they are often reluctant or unable due to the electronics and vehicle safety sensors that are fitted into tubs these days.
-
@svend that alu tray is all i want in a work vehicle.
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly Before I found my Rampage I was really considering chopping a Transit Connect into a mini truck. I was going to do the bulk of the work and then pass off the body filler and painting to a shop. Then I found the Dodge and that all went out the window. The Rampage needs a lot of body work but I’m just not ready to strip it down for that until my AMC is running reliably.
-
@classicdatsundebate Apparently your Sport Trak was around 2002 to 2010.
We had the Ranger Wildtrak and Thunder of the time.
