I really love my GTI, it is paid for, and has a lot of room left on the "we're sorry about that whole emissions fraud thing" warranty - about 30k miles to go. But something about this blue 2021 Golf R with a manual strikes my fancy. I'm thinking about trading or selling the GTI and buying one outright when they get here. Change my mind.
Anyway I thought of trading the Alltrack for one then. Here I am again...
-
I guess what I would ask is, what do you want to use it for? You ride motorcycles now, have classic cars, so is the GTI just a modern reliable daily and GT car that's somewhat fun? The R is an awesome car, if you want to daily it that's great but I'd be sad if it didn't get autocrossed or tracked or something!
-
@immoralminority No sir, I will not change your mind. The logic is sound, and needs no meddling.
-
I would if I could. It's basically the only "super hot hatch" available that also happens to have some refinement and subtle styling.
-
How many fun cars are left with a manual, while under warranty? Very, very few, and this might be the only hatchback with 300+ hp, awd and a manual.
If I could forget my Touareg experience, this car would be in top of my list.
-
Because the last one was so well set up it was sterile and boring (at least stock). You could have a nap while taking corners flat out. Not my idea of fun.
That said I obviously haven't driven this one. But IMO the last one needed to have at least 400HP and be thrashed before it would be interesting, at which point if things go poorly, you may be dead

If you don't need the AWD, the new GTI (or maybe even your current) are a better car.
-
@jb-boin How's that?

It's cheaper, lighter, more nimble, more playful and based on the same engine.

But the MKVIII is going to have insane torque vectoring, so that miniscule 200ish pound weight penalty is more than made up for in increased grip.
Plus, in the R, the AWD does add to the fun factor.
-
@jb-boin Based on the same engine but 25-30% more power while under warranty, puts down the power way better with AWD, and the 200lbs weight difference is negligible with the power and torque difference (and the weight is in the back for better balance).
Plus, the 4 exhaust tips. You can't have too many exhaust tips
I like the GTI, but the R is another league. Like WRX and STi.

The Corolla hatch comes in a pretty shade of blue

I forgot that the normal GTI was "only" 245hp, the previous generation was only sold on it's Clubsport version (290hp) here for the last 1 or 2 years which was quite close to the R in term of power.
The new Clubsport will have 300hp.So comparing the Clubsport to the R, it really depend on where you drive but if there are tight corners and no cold weather, it's in most cases less fun with AWD.
-
I say go for it! This new R should be excellent with it's new awd system. It seems it's not brake actuated like mine, which will be good for track related use! The only thing i'm not fond of is the front end looks. Good to see you here btw
-
This sounds like an excellent idea. You get the R in a few years, then leave it with me for a few days so I can do some paint correction and put a coating on it, then I can test drive it. I really want to get my own so I can continue with my Golf buying. I can't have a MKVI, MKVII, and not a MKVIII.
-
@jb-boin Isn't the Clubsport more expensive than the R?
-
@musashi66 i don't think so but as they are not sold anymore and the new is not out yet, i can't answer.

The MKVIII is a little jarring, but I think it will look fine in person. Plus, the R blue helps things a LOT.
-
@His_Stigness @His_Stigness agreed, the blue is nice. It's really the front end, the rear 'R' badge and the piano black interior. Wonder if they will offer Spektrum again. Some of those colors were amazing, such as Racing Green!

I hope they offer Spektrum again. But considering it took until the end of the MKVII for VWoA to finally get it, I have little hope. Wolfsburg continues to shit on the US market and it's really frustrating. According to reports they had to fight tooth and nail for every single ID4 allotment. And even then we only got a handful.

@musashi66
Well, there's the Yaris GR, but I think not for you.... -
@cé-hé-sin not over 300hp and not available in USA
