Where are all the two door mk7s?
-
I saw this two door Volkswagen Golf GTI mk7 the other day and realized that you simply NEVER see them. Two door mk6s, occasionally yes, but two door mk7s are surprisingly elusive. Why is this? Out of all of the mk7 owners here, I can't think of anyone that has a two door Golf.
-
They stopped building them for the US within the last couple years.
-
They stopped production either in early ‘17 or late ‘16. On top of that, they were order only in their last year I believe, and only in S trim for their last year.
-
@whoistheleader Ah, fourth street.
-
@whoistheleader Hah didn't even know there was a 2 door mk7! It looks so right on the Mk4's but so odd to me here. Had to be that they weren't selling. I know my mom ditched her cooper S for a GTI so it was easier for her to get my kiddo in the back.
-
In the junkyard!
(sorry, I had to)
-
@dogisbadob Well that's where many will end up but VW has (slightly) improved since the 2000s.
-
@tripper I know, right? I had to look it up to make sure they were sold here at all. You can barely even find good pictures online of US spec ones. I guess non-novel (ie Mini) two doors don't sell anymore.
-
@fancy-toyota-family I really wonder why they had such a crazy low take rate though. It made sense to discontinue them early in the car's life considering how poorly they sold but I think they could have sold more if they had tried.
-
Replaced by the better four doors, God Willing
-
@e90m3 Indeed. Fourth street. It was definitely a vibe walking along at 3 AM last night.
-
@whoistheleader I feel like with the introduction of a 4 door GTI it broadened it’s appeal to those looking for an ‘adult-ish’ fun car and that’s why the 4 door became the standard build.
When the Mk7 came out I was considering buying a 2 door but local dealers never kept many in stock. -
In hell, where they belong. Coupes are stupid, but not as stupid as two door hatches. Hatches are supposed to be the most utility possible in as small a footprint as possible, and removing two doors negates 40% of that utility.
Four doors for more... utility.

But two doors! I've found the back seat of a two door mk6 Golf to be pretty easy to get in and out of and pretty roomy for the size of the vehicle.
-
@fancy-toyota-family That's a good point. The mk7 really felt like more of a grownup fun car than a youth oriented hot hatch compared to previous generations. And adults need four doors often for responsible adult things.
-
@whoistheleader Yeah, two door Golf are easy to get into the back of... for a two door. You know what's easier to get into the back seat of?
A four door Golf.
The only thing a two door wins at IMO is aesthetics, which... don't really matter at all when you're inside the car, much less driving. And like... hatchbacks are ugly. There, I said it. All of them look like shit. I love them but they look like shit.

If you can't decide between a 2-door or a 4-door, get a 3-door!
In the KDM you can actually get a 4-door Veloster
-
@dogisbadob WHAT? FOUR DOOR VELOSTER? Is that what this is? I was looking at this image and was really really confused.
I am finding all of these photos with a driver's side passenger door and I was so confused.
-
@qaaaaa Yes, for a two door, but also lots of smaller four doors have such narrow door openings that if you don't use the back seats often it's better to get the two door so you can get out of the thing easier from the driver's seat. It's not really a huge deal.

British-market Velosters have two doors on the left and one door on the right. Same for other RHD markets.
I think the 4-door Veloster is only sold in Korea, but I could be wrong.

@whoistheleader I guess I'll agree in the case of subcompacts like the 500, mini, Micra, Up!, and stuff that size where the back seat exists as an "if you must". Having sat in the back of a 500 and a mini, they'd both be better off as two seaters. A Golf? No, that car can totally fit three people in back. There should be back doors.
However, in general, I'm of the opinion that if there exists sedan and hatchback version of the same car, the sedan looks better nine times out of ten.
-
@qaaaaa I think the larger the car, the better it looks as a sedan. For instance, the Fiesta sedan was an abomination while I think the Jetta looks a good deal better than the Golf. I feel like it's around 50/50 in compacts. For your consideration:
In my opinion, the first gen (non US) hatchback looked much worse than the sedan and then things flipped in the second.
You are definitely right in that subcompact hatchbacks' back seats are such a joke that they only need two doors. But regular compacts can make sense as two doors depending on their overall size and what you are using it for.

There was always a 5 door GTi available from the start in Europe. -
@ka467 I’m not 100% sure about USA offerings, but I think we only got 4 door GTI’s starting with the Mk5.
-
I am not sure they were still available in Europe either after 2017 or 2018, they are quite rare here.
And a 3 doors with it's bigger and heavier doors is not practical for a city use plus the folding seats that are an additional reliability risk.
