Finally doing it
-
Went on a drive and when it came time to turn around I decided not to, this is something I'd been wanting to do since getting a license. Theres always been a reasons not to go, be it money, unreliable car, work, or bad time of year.
With winter on the way there's already snowfall starting in the mountain passes, so doing it now rather then later seemed good.
The idea has always been to drive more then any great planned event.
Today is from Elko to Salt Lake City then a hotel somewhere in Arizona, the Grand Canyon? Don't want to go too far east because I'd like to be back at the coast before Friday.
-
@sony1492 I'm jealous. I really hope to do something like this at some point. Enjoy your freedom!
-
How long is this journey?
-
-
@jb-boin 700-ish miles so far and a little over 13hrs of driving. Doing a huge loop east, then south a state, and finally back to the coast will add 1700 miles
-
@sony1492 backroads are best roads.
Yes we're all jealous. -
Hell yeah! Enjoy the scenery and the cheap gas outside of CA!
-
Very jealous! Sounds like a lot of fun!
-
I ended up in Miles City, Montana, at three in the morning doing that once. Left from Superior WI after class one day, and just kept driving...
-
This is awesome. Driving to the bank to deposit a couple thousand in cash I've thought, I could go a long way on this...
-
Oh man, you ought to throw in the names of the better roads in case some of us ever end up west (or are already west).
Happy travels!
-
Awesome - would LOVE to do that......too many responsibilities prevents it
-
Probably safe to say we're all jealous - have fun!
-
@sony1492 do you have some time in SLC? If you are a fan of mountains drive up little cottonwood canyon while you are in town, super pretty right now that we got some snow up there.
-
@italia damn, just passed through(150 miles ago)
-
@trivet been putting it off for the better part of 7 years, where theres a will theres a way.
-
A month ago we did Gold Bar, WA to Redding, CA and back. Drove ~ 350 miles/day in the wife's Miata. Highway 299 between Redding and the Oregon border was one of the best drives, ever.

Pretty much all the roads that link hey 101 on the coast to hwy 5 are great. A little further south is hwy 36 between fortuna and Redbluff, highly recommend that. Usually alot less traffic and a bit more technical/ slow.

@sony1492 should get into camping rather than a hotel
cheaper, more freedom, more empowering.
When I left home roadtrips were illegal, now they're not. When I get back I can't wait to take the MR2 deeep into the country -
@nauraushaun busy learning that the hard way, 2 nights in budget hotels pretty much doubled the cost of the trip.
Next time I'm outfitting the interior with blankets and such.(not a fan of tents) pretty sure its illegal in alot of places to sleep in your car, but better they falling asleep at the wheel
-
@sony1492 Hey that will do. I hope your seats fold flat. My mate was doing that in a Holden Astra, he built some sort of wooden thing to help flatten the interior out a bit. He ended up moving to a tent though.
If you figure out car sleepin', all you've gotta worry about is fuel
