Cheap FSR Vehicle Hunt
-
I've been looking at Patriots with the Freedom II package. They seem to get good reviews with proper skidplates and other little tricky bits. More importantly...CHEAP.
-
Your car-shopping is more aimless than my own. A Patriot?! Who ARE you anymore.
-
Take this whole post back....take it back.
-
@classicdatsundebate NEVER.
They do actually get OK reviews for offroad though
-
@dr-zoidberg they seem...OK?
-
@carsoffortlangley You seem to have a sudden interest in things with four doors... You were shopping hard for a 2-door Joop forever... [ellipsis intensify]
-
@dr-zoidberg Four door is gonna be a requirement moving forward sadly.
-
Ugh! I didn't even know you had friends
-
@dr-zoidberg worse... he might have spawned...
-
@carsoffortlangley This comes from a man who has taken a lot of vehicles pretty far off road that never should have been there.
This is a stock rental corolla
You can do better than a patriot.
-
@dr-zoidberg I don't. Just...you know.
-
@carsoffortlangley MARRIAGE
-
I absolutely hate the driving position in those. I wouldn't. They can be found with 5 speeds reasonably easily with 4x4 and that does a lot for that engine but they're slow, poorly built, and poorly engineered.
I should say that as a 4x4 utility wagon it's not terrible but as a car it's not at all good. If you're not convinced, drive one.
-
@carsoffortlangley just buy a Suzuki SX4 and be done with it.
-
Have you driven one? It's on the same platform as the Caliber....if it's anything like a Caliber to drive, it will be hateful.
The higher end of Patriot pricing that age is roughly the lower end of 4th gen 4Runner pricing.....that will last longer, be more capable, and better to drive, and hold value better -
Also don't forget about Suzukis
-
You should definitely test drive a WJ if you test drive a Patriot.
-
Buy this '03 Volvo XC90 T6, probably pick it up for $4.5k easy.
-
@just-jeepin Yours in/out of the shop yet?
-
@CarsOfFortLangley Lift the GSW! Tons of lift kits around. Or don't and just throw a metal skid plate on it and be careful. I know you said it came a bit close last time, but I really think with some careful lines through bumpy bits of road it would do alright based on the stuff my e-golf has done. MK7s have a good front lip for not scraping on stuff.
Just... don't buy the Patriot
-
@jminer just took it in yesterday. No idea when I’ll see it again.
I’m headed to a state park cabin for Thanksgiving so I hope I have it back by then, but I’m not optimistic.
-
@CarsOfFortLangley Hey, I owned a Patriot for a few years, let me know if if have any questions.
Long story short, the Patriot is a mixed bag. Stay away from the 5-spd manual and the CVT; look for a six-speed auto instead. That's my biggest takeaway.
-
Watch out for that Nissan/Jatco CVT and the craptastic interior from the first couple of years. Anything 2013 and newer with the traditional hyundai gearbox are decent little boxes.
-
Just get a XJ cherokee if thats the size you are looking at. Or a Isuzu Rodeo/Honda Passport.. or a Pathfinder with the 3.5 V6. All of the aforementioned vehicles also have a three pedal option and are wayyyy better than a Patriot.
-
@Just-Jeepin here's hoping!
