First Post - Howdy Oppo
-
Hi all, I've been lurking around Oppo for ages but never really had much to say. I suppose with the move to a new platform I can snake my way in here and start contributing!
A little about myself: I'm currently in the midst of shifting careers after working in the bicycle industry for about a decade. As such, I'm a huge bicycle nerd and it's very likely that the vast majority of my contributions will be of the two-wheeled variety.
Some vehicles I've owned: a 1981 240d Mercedes, acquired for free, which I spent the majority of my formative years working on. 2006 BMW 325i. 2016 Subaru WRX. 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen (current).
Motos: Hammered 2007 Ducati Monster 750. 2013 Husqvarna TE310R enduro.
Currently I've got one of these, a 2021 Yeti SB 115, seen here in Sedona:
Obligatory old Benz photo for your time:
Looking forward to sharing auto, moto, and bicycle-related experiences with you all.

@azw123 Welcome! We love two wheeled content here so share as much as you want!
-
Sounds like you have serious cred with any number of wheels and displacement. Welcome! We have a very active cycling community here, as you already know.
-
Welcome! You'll fit right in with that Sportwagen. Seems like nearly all of us have a mk7 of some description. They're good cars.
-
Hey @azw123 ! Welcome! It's great seeing all the prior lurkers showing up to join the fray! Take a read of the User Guide if you need some help, and enjoy yourself!

@rallydarkstrike Thanks! I figured this was as good a time as any to come out of the shadows and help keep things lively around here.
-
@whoistheleader Thanks! It's a bit of a change from the WRX, but ever so much more practical. It's the absolute base model and still does about 95% of what I need it to.
-
Looks like you'll slither in here just fine with that roster.
-
@azw123 Just how base could you get them? I am somewhat of a base model lover, having a Cruze with the only options being the automatic and wonderful bright paint. Not sure why that's what the original owner went for but I like it.
I bet that's a big shift from the WRX. I assume the VW is FWD? What's the other 5% you need it to do?
-
Welcome! Plenty of Sportwagen owners here! Also, nice bike! Is that a brand new model? I've been fortunate enough to demo a few Yetis (SB5C/SB6) and really enjoyed them.
-
Hello and welcome! I have way more bikes than I have vehicles but the vast majority of the whole collection is unusable right now. So you’re probably more qualified to be here than me
-
@whoistheleader It's an auto and that's about it. FWD. Honestly, the base model comes with more bells and whistles than I had expected. My '16 WRX
(also a base model) seemed like it barely came with power windows. I guess that's not a car you buy for the amenities, though.Would've gotten a manual if they'd had one on the lot, but I was in a situation where I needed a car asap. I did, however, get to drive the cheapest possible 4-door Jetta (manual) while I was at the dealer and it was shockingly not terrible.
-
@azw123 welcome! Great stable!
-
@beatergt Seems like it! There also appear to be several Allroad owners, of whom I am somewhat jealous.
Yep, I picked it up in mid-August. I've put some decent miles on it and it seems to do everything I need it to. I was riding a 2020 Niner RIP before that (140 rear / 150 front suspension travel) and it was kind of overkill. The Yeti is ever so slightly less capable in the really wild stuff, but it's a lot easier bike to spend all day riding.
-
@azw123 The base Sportwagen is really all the car you could possibly need if you aren't after a third row. I really like the mk7s and I could totally see myself owning one at some point.
The review of my car probably read very similar to yours. It's also a base model FWD German (yes) car with the only options being an auto (plus a hilariously rare fun paint color) that comes with tons of bells and whistles (for the time) like bluetooth, power windows, etc. It's a good bit more car than I really need so I've been looking at sporty two doors to replace it. I've never actually run out of space even with 5 people and their baggage but a longroof would make that easier.
That car has been reviewed so many times on Kinja but you could be the first with a mk7 review on the Hyphen! It's fun, really! I'm by no means an excellent writer but I have fun reviewing cars on here.

@azw123 Welcome! I've actually got a bike from on order from AZ. I'm waiting for State Bike Co. to send me the frame for my new fixie build.
-
@azw123 sweet bike and welcome to the Mk7 club! We’re planning a coup, but don’t tell anyone.
-
@classicdatsundebate Thanks! Most of those have come and gone, particularly when I downsized to move to Boston for grad school a few years ago, but I'm slowly starting to piece the stable back together.
-
@azw123 Bruins fan??....sorry, Oppo’s all full at this time....
-
@classicdatsundebate Ha! Only a B's fan when I'm at a bar in Boston. Gotta read the room. Otherwise I'm a Lightning guy. Learned to skate at the Ice Palace in Tampa as a lad in the early 90's.
-
@ita97 Rad! I was very into riding fixed for a long time.
-
@whoistheleader Ha! Yes, reviewing that car might be beating a dead horse at this point. We'll see. Maybe I'll write a little something about how it does on its next big road trip.
I grew up with parents who always had wagons, which is probably why it was an easy choice to get the VW.
-
@azw123 welcome! The MK7 longroof club will accept your membership shortly. Any photos of said mk7? I'm also from a family of wagon owners, it's a good call.
Dig the bike too! I'm fairly new to "bikes for sport/fun" but have been commuter biking for a while and love riding gravel now. Happy to see more bike stuff here and AZ is a great place for it.

@spacekraken MK7 content, as requested:

@azw123 Welcome! My brother had a 300sd in that same "french fry yellow". Ran on veggie oil until he got T-boned buy a kid which folded it in half.
