So much for two weeks more to archive. I’m glad I already saved what I wanted to save, but it was still jarring to go to check Oppo today and get the 404 error.
I’m a bit sad, but my happiness outweighs it seeing how promising the Hyphen is.

I think all of us chanting "Fuck you Jim Herb." over the weekend & into monday made them kill it off with no 2 weeks.

I bet it didn’t help, but considering all other user blogs were nuked at the same time makes me doubt how much of an effect we had. But if it was from all the Herbposting, that’s hilarious that his skin is that thin.

@gmctavish Same. I was all prepared to finish my archiving today and then I find that they yanked the plug early. One more reason to avoid all of their sites...

Yep. I saw a theory they just did it this way cause it was easier than coding a way to hide or turn off specific stuff.

@6mt_ftw same here man. I actually think Jalopnik is looking up with the recent hires and I've always liked Gizmodo and checking Kotaku once in a while but I don't think I'll be back too often after this.

@dawrx I've been looking through the way that it works and it doesn't really look like they gave themselves an easy out - almost like they never planned to have to delete any part of Kinja.

Also remember Oppo was the biggest & most active Kinja User blog. They for sure had their eye's on it.

Fair point. I hope at the very least we ruined the herbs day.

@the-crazy-kanuck as I'm scraping through the old comments (hopefully I can pull a fair amount down before it is all permadeleted) it really is crazy how much of the stuff posted to Kinja was Oppo. If I manage to pull down what I want and the posts are still there after then I'll see if I can run it again calculating what % of posts were to Oppo (right now it just ignores the ones that aren't) but it feels like 10% of all Kinja was Oppo.

@6MT_FTW Apparently there is still an Atom feed we can pull data off still, but I haven't tried...search the threads here, I remember reading earlier about folks gaining access to it...they might be able to help?

                                [x-post from discord]
My closest guess is that it's http://oppositelock.kinja.com/rss/export as http://[USERNAME].kinja.com/rss/export is what's given as the "Atom feed" when you go to your individual user blog.

I haven't tried it yet. Hopefully we'll find out if there's a way to get the whole thing soon. Looks like @Jb-boin was able to get a chunk of it going back to mid-2018 here: https://jbboin.phpnet.org/oppo/extractor/archive/oppositelock/

@stef-schrader I was able to use the Atom feed to make a list of all top-level posts in 2016. Then I wrote a script to start pulling the text-only versions out of Kinja using their API. No pictures but it has the like counts and at least some of the comments. Right now it’s at 6000 of 58000 posts. If It works I’ll start on 2017 and hopefully get to where the other guys left off. I sent a message to the real experts like jb over on Dischord and hopefully they can use the list to pull a proper archive with the images. I can see the images still on Kinja but the pulling all of them out with a script is about beyond my skill level and probably hard drive space as well.

@stef-schrader You’re welcome. It won’t be perfect but it’s better than letting it all die. Ran overnight and up to 43400 of 57900 from 2016. Still just archiving the text only because I think that’s the most important part. I’ll do 2017 next and just see how far it can go before either the plug gets permanently pulled by G/O or my IP address gets blocked for crawling the site.

2016 is done. I posted a link to the raw archive in the Discord chat. It isn't really usable right now unless you know MATLAB and JSON. Butt now we have time extract the good stuff on our schedule rather than theirs. I'm setting up for 2017 now and hopefully can grab more than 10 replies with an example jb-boin figured out.
