Do you think you could have $2500 worth of fun with this?
-
Just asking. Apparently raced when parked.....
Screaming hot deal for anybody with a hankering for
a vintage formula car.....https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/906877620462142/?mibextid=dXMIcH

@RacinBob That is AMAZING
-
@Just-Jeepin You can already feel your back giving out just thinking about the process of climbing into that thing, can't ya?
-
@RacinBob This would be awesome except there's nowhere for the instructor to sit and I lack the credential to get out of the novice class at a track day
-
@flatisflat Mainly thinking about all the cool stuff I could buy for $2500.
-
@MM54 Oh, This is probably a better car for someone with experience racing, but I wouldn't say you can't do it if you mechanically adept and have been doing some sort of racing/autocross before.
Guys just like me have bought a race car and shown up at the track before. Heck, that's how most have us have started. This would be a perfect car for someone who has done carts or bikes before. But note its capable of probably 125 mph and that could get interesting real fast if things go wrong.
-
@RacinBob Don't get me wrong, I'd love to go to every trackday within day-trip radius. I just lack a car that is in the cross section of "suitable for driving around a track" and "wouldn't break me if someone smashes into it" so my experience has ended up being limited to the occasional go-karts and some autocross here and there.
-
@Just-Jeepin you mean, like a used 20ft shipping container with delivery included?
-
@ranwhenparked Hopefully a new transmission for the LJ. Or a new front axle.
Or use it to buy lottery tickets and hope I win enough to grab this spectacular beauty.
-
@RacinBob Very cool. I have no racing experience but I’d sure have $2500 worth of fun just getting it going again
-
@JunkleMKVII Well, than you might be just the person for it. Its not so complex of a car. I assume its a Ford 2 liter, with a hewland or similar manual transmission.
If you show up to the track with it, there will be many grey hairs around that know about these cars. All it takes is some common sense, a garage and some time.
I am not sure that their description is correct that this was a Formula Ford first and then a C sports racer. it seems like a very professional body construction for a conversion. Here is the definition of the class. It looks to have a ford 1600 with a crossflow head.
C Sports Racer (CSR) now known as Prototype 1 (P1) is a class in the Sports Car Club of America. it consists of open top prototype style cars. The maximum displacement is 1615cc, in a 2 valve crossflow engine, with a minimum weight of 1300lbs w/driver.
https://www.wikiwand.com/en/C_Sports_RacerIt seems like a good bit of race craft as a foundation for a nice restoration,.
-
@JunkleMKVII This might be the type of car it was based on if it was a formula car conversion.....

@RacinBob If I thought I could get away with it I would, but I’ve already got the Midget project, a she-shed, and a soon to be wedding to finish. Plus nowhere to put it at the moment. Something like that is definitely on the someday list though.
Maybe @davesaddiction needs it and I can just go over to his place and look at it?
-
@JunkleMKVII The guy was a Midwest Council racer like me and we probably were at the same tracks from '84 till '96 when it was last raced. I wouldn't probably have known him. Everything about the look of it seems to indicate its a good, practical race car.
If you google the drivers name + Race, he just passed away in December.
-
Very cool…
-
@RacinBob Thar would make a hell of a go cart!
-
@RacinBob Wow, that's a really good deal. If it started as a gen 1 SRF it probably wouldn't be particularly competitive if rebuilt to SRF spec, but that's still awful cheap for a CSR that needs recommisioning.
-
@MM54 Dude, just throw some track pads and fluid in your Fiata and go to Nelson. It'll be fine.
If you wait til Septemberish, 9fest is a great first HPDE. They haven't announced dates yet, but it's a joint PCA event (note that I do not own a Porsche): https://www.9fest.com/#/
It's pretty cheap, most of the driving in pretty chill and not aggressive, everyone in novice has an instructor, and it's a really easy track. The runoffs are pretty sketchy in some areas, but if you have an ounce of restraint, you won't go off
The group of guys I go to track days with have a joint spreadsheet with events within reasonable distance of Dayton, you're welcome to join us at any of these: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A1mE0fax-BO1XCvzfhY84W0X7v-x3PcB69F8NfUKhfs/edit#gid=1646115453
I'm thinking about Mid Ohio on April 14-16.
-
@RacinBob I'm queuing up the "dumb ways to die" song now....I didn't say it wouldn't be fun though, it would be A LOT of fun!
-
- This is awesome.
- I have money burning a hole in my pocket.
- My buddy who works on these kinds of race cars says it'll take $10-15k to get it well sorted.
- It's a couple indicators and LED flashlights away from being "street legal" here in MI.
-
@RacinBob This is awesome! $2500 is nothing when you consider your average race weekend will be around $3,000. Regarding experience, I'd say this is a fantastic platform for someone new to racing.
-
That'd be a hell of a fun autocross car.
