Does anyone else do this?

I'm getting set to change the oil in my wife's Infiniti, and as always, I forgot that I was clever once upon a time, and wrote the plug socket size and oil capacity on the radiator support in Sharpie. Thank you, past-me!
-
@Mark-Tucker I do not do that -- primarily because I'm not that clever, and also because I never change my own oil, haha!
-
@Mark-Tucker I keep record of fluid changes on a notecard in the glovebox, which lists capacity/type of fluid. As for the drain plug size... nah, not particularly challenging to find out once you're down there.
-
@Mark-Tucker not for socket sizes but there are a bunch of holes on the front crash structure of the mini for bolt holes; 2 of them are for studs
I have some sharpie commenting on which these holes are so that I dont try to put bolts there (the studs arnt clearly visible iirc) -
The big boss at work absolutely hates us writing with sharpie on the equipment, so we make any notes like that with a label maker. It does look a lot more clean.
-
@Mark-Tucker I mark the oil capacity on the under side of the hood, a little less conspicuous than the radiator support but not the plug size, that last part is smart too. I have a dedicated 6-point socket I use since I had rounded over the corners of the previous plug with the 12-point wrench.
-
@Mark-Tucker not on the car itself, but I’ve got a note on my phone with useful numbers for each car - oil capacity and type, tire pressures, key fob battery size, sizes and where appropriate torques of sump plug, wheel nuts, calliper bolts and other commonly removed fixings, part numbers of filters, brake pads and suchlike consumables, and so on
-
@Mark-Tucker I have a binder for each vehicle for maintenance records I have taped a note of lug nut size, oil type, drain plug size, etc
-
@Mark-Tucker I'm not quite sure how I remember that my Mustang's drain plugs (yes it has two for the engine) are 13mm, but my Jeep's is 16mm and I know that because it's the same number that many brands use for the filter (Fram PH16, STP S16, etc)
Actually, come to think of it, I've probably memorized the 13mm because I color-coded my sockets with paint and I remember using a blue socket.

If I remember right, I did this because I was beginning to find getting down there (and back up again) to be the challenging part. I only want to make one trip under if I can.
-
@Mark-Tucker I put the required tools on the “invoice templates” for each car.

Ford issues amirite
I remember after helping my dad find a new car for mom after her '95 Eagle Vision grenaded its transmission, he did an oil change on the replacement (a 1990 Ford Crown Victoria, box body). He came back inside looking frustrated, saying how he added 4 quarts and now the level is WAY overfilled according to the dipstick. I laughed and asked if he pulled the second drain plug, the look on his face was priceless.
-
@atfsgeoff Complicating that was the run of mis-marked dipsticks, subject of a TSB or a recall. They showed full with about 2 quarts in the pan.
I've got a double-sure system for oil changes. One, the core support is marked, and two, all the oil-change tools are in their own box.

Sounds like something the French would do

@Mark-Tucker no way! I forget my required materials/specs and look at the owners manual/AllData every time I do maintenance, like a real man

Well, the engines were made in Windsor, so... French-adjacent, sort of?
-
@Mark-Tucker I keep forgetting to do this. I’m gonna go with white marker on the pan if I ever remember.

@Mark-Tucker you should provide wrong info there for fun
