Keeping up with the Chryslers Morph
-
Chrysler product meeting, 1960:
"Hey fellas, we've done a great job with the 1960 Chrysler 300F. But time flies - it's nearly 1961 already, and the 300F is hopelessly outdated! Don't get me wrong, it was fantastic when it came out, but now it looks like a Model T fucked a Flinstones car and their baby lived to be 100! It's clear to a blind man that the 300 is in dire need of a redesign, and I know you guys are up to the job. Make it happen!"The inbetweener looks like a plausible half-year model refresh!

@WBizarre Tilted quad headlights is an oddly era-specific look. Chrysler, Lincoln, and Buick all did it in '59-60, and by '62 they had all stopped.
'58 was the first year for quad headlights. I guess they all saw each others' '58 models and all decided to do the same thing to set themselves apart.
-
@WBizarre "Flip that frown upside down!"
-
@Old-Busted-Hotness I think they had a new toy (quads) and decided to play with it. For what it’s worth, a few low volume cars went beyond ‘62 (Rolls MPW comes to mind), probably because they don’t redesign them frequently.
-
@Old-Busted-Hotness Flash in the pan. Buick Electra might be my favorite interpretation:
It seems the Brits took this trend and ran with it for longer, like the Triumph Vitesse through 1971:
-
@WBizarre I’m on record saying both versions were two of the best looking cars of that period. Would kill to have either one.
-
@WilliamsSW @Old-Busted-Hotness The Michelotti designed Prince Skyline coupe came to my mind that apparently continued until 1964.
-
@WBizarre '60 Chryslers are one of My favorite tailfin designs. The 300F is My least favorite out of them though because of the faux spare tire hump in the trunk lid. Seemingly odd thing to add as a differentiating design detail for a sport model.
-
@WilliamsSW the same thing happened in the '70s with rectangular and square headlights, practically every car had them overnight, erasing any benefit of variety, but at least they were new
-
@WBizarre So that's where the Jeep angry eyes came from.
