3rd Gen 4Runner Oil Filter Access
-
This is another test post for some Stuff but it has a topic of the lousy oil filter access on a 3rd gen 4runner with the 5VZ!
Pasting images in works well.
Not entirely sure how the "insert a thumbnail" works but it doesn't seem to allow pasting a picture directly in, instead requiring a "browse" to select a file. Curious to see where that appears.
- This is the first item in a list, useful formatting
- Manual entries work well, just an asterisk, no bbcode or html required
- To reach the oil filter on a V6 3rd gen 4Runner you must remove a plastic fastener to free up the mudguard, stack extensions on a filter grabber thing, and loosen the filter before using your spaghetti-arms to reach in and take it the rest of the way off, all while dribbling oil down the side of the engine and onto the skidplate, which redirects it into many locations on the floor.
This content is after the list.

what's this look like (code tags which is three `s)
Oh that's cute, it wants to be an IDE!
For my next trick I'll try to draft a reply to this and not post it and see if I can save drafts.
-
This is a reply which I shan't post for a while to see if it saves drafts.
Oh it does! That's handy. Before I post, does it save across topics or just in this one?
It does! Just in this one! So you can type a reply, forget about it, and come back later! Neat.

@mm54 The thumbnail shows up in the main thread page, not within the post itself
-
As I have discovered - I like it.
-
@mm54 Not quite as good as Oppo was, but it's something
-
Ah, the multi extension game. When I pulled the engine from my Eagle I had 1/2 ext - uv joint - 1/2 ext - 1/2 ext - uv+adapter - 3/8 extension - adapter - 1/2 breaker bar with snipe. All from underneath the car... was a scenario
-
@sn4cktimes What needed such a string of extensions?! That's crazy. Bellhousing bolts inaccessible or something?
-
so we can't just copy and paste images like kinja then unfortunately
-
@samv8 Sure you can - paste it in while you're typing your response and it inserts
-
@samv8 You can but they don't show up in the 'edit' area, they show up as a string of formatting there but are visible in the 'preview pane' on the right (if on Windows, Linux or Mac)...not sure how the preview pane works on mobile!
-
doesn't let my paste in an image in this quick reply bit at the bottom of a thread
-
@samv8 Interesting. If you click "reply" on a post and get the full editor, it works
(for example I copy/pasted your profile image here:
) -
Can you not reach down and grab it from the top of the engine bay?
-
@samv8 Nope, you have to use the full editor for that!
-
@dipodomysdeserti It's a tight fit, right under the alternator so you're best bet is to go through the wheel well.
Toyota fixed it on the later generator. It sits in a little well you can remove, grab the dripping oil with a cup, and swap it in about 15 seconds.

You can reach down in front of the alternator and sort of reach out and touch it, but it's not in a position to get any real torque on that way, especially in the "loosen" direction. The engine/chassis/alternator is above it, and the frame/front diff is below it. Best bet is via the wheel well which is kind of a pain.
-
@rctothefuture Gotcha. It's a tight fit on my Tundra. I put a big rag underneath it to catch the dripping/spilled oil so I don't have to pull off the skid plate and clean it.
-
@dipodomysdeserti Toyota had some shitty filter locations for awhile. Their 4 cylinders had it under the intake and it would drip on the stater.
Now they use a cartridge filter necessitating a new tool and if it strips you're really fucked.
