Where to sell tires?
-
I bought Blizzaks last year for my stock GTI wheels for winter, and I hate them. If it actually snowed here I might have a different opinion, but as it stands last winter was 40 and wet every day. This year it's been sunny and warm thus far.
So I want to swap them for Continental DWS-06s and sell the Blizzaks, but I really don't want to deal with all the fuckwits on CL and I refuse to give Fuckerzerg any more data.
Anyone around Dayton, Ohio want some extremely gently used winter tires in 225/40/18? Like they might have 2k miles on them. Doubtful it's even that much. They still have the yellow dots from the factory on the sidewalls.

'I wanna sell these'
'I don't want to use the 2 single most used selling platforms created'
make like the 90s and buy a listing in your newspaper then....
EDIT: or geta friend with those to sell them
-
@adabofoppo There's offerup and letgo, which I've tried but had very few people ping me on them and have not successfully sold anything through.
Also - classifieds section on the Hyphen? Hmmm....
-
@jminer If you do the regional sections for meet-ups, you could add a classified section to each?
-
@davesaddiction very possibly.
-
@jminer But hell, Oppos are the type to drive halfway across the country to buy a used exhaust, or engine block, or set of wheels, or rolling heap so...
-
@davesaddiction Without a doubt they are. I and many others here have driven way too far for way too little before.
-
Rather than mocking me, you could be helpful.
And I am aware I am making my life possibly more difficult. I do not want to deal with the people who happen to inhabit either of those platforms if I can avoid it. So I will. Unless I can't, but I still get to make that choice.
-
@adabofoppo i mean, you could wait until a family member wants them.
but you are literally make your life harder for....what reason, exactly?
Most people on facebook are generally decent people. I've never had issues either as buyer or seller. you could try Ebay, but be prepared to pay out the butt-hole for their fees.
or, as I mentioned before, get a friend to do it. (yes, i am a bit of a dick, but I do help. that was in the OG reply)

Well, Fuckerzerg won't get my business out of spite and principle.
CL might wind up being the only way, but after reading so many horror stories about CL buyers, I am wary of giving it a try at all.
-
I definitely get it with hesitance to use those platforms. I'm thinking of donating my Jeep because I really, really, really don't want to deal with selling it 3rd party, especially during a pandemic. Also it's almost worthless so it may as well go to a good cause rather than have to deal with getting lowballed on what would likely be a 3 figure list price.
Hey I wonder if The Hyphen should have a classifieds section ...
-
Heartily agree on a principled stance against Fuckerzerg.
I still think CL is your best choice, as nasty as it may be. Also, being in an area only somewhat wintery, it may be a tough sell during what is a tough year for most financially.
Maybe post them in CL regions a little North and try to pull in somebody ready to go for a long drive? -
@adabofoppo I understand the CL hesitation. The best CL trick I've found has been to put a specific direction for prospective buyers to follow and then ignore all inquiries that don't. For example, I'll specify something like to call for more info, and then ignore anything that isn't a phone call. It isn't perfect, but a small exercise in following directions seems to go a long ways to weeding out the scams and "will you take payments?" crowd, and getting you to folks who are actually interested and have money to pay you.

@adabofoppo What about a VW forum then? It’s a limited audience, but at least the size will work for someone there.
-
Find who sells used tires in your area, then see if they want to buy them. Used car dealers will buy sometimes as well.
-
I usually find a friend with a car that they fit on then convince them they need winter tires. Has happened 3 times for far.

Hey I wonder if The Hyphen should have a classifieds section ...
It briefly did but we voted quite early to cut almost all sections before it became too forum-ish. Currently the only offshoots are a political section to keep it off the main feed the now displaced Overland guys. Whom I am very happy to see make the jump. Not sure if we’re just their marshalling point or permanent home, but I hope they hang about.
My concern with a specific classifieds section is that it becomes like most of those sections on most forums. A place people join to post an ad and then bail. Some boards require a minimum amount of comments or other posts but sometimes that leads to some pretty shitty people temporarily hopping on board and being a bit disrespectful.

Once you sell them for the DWS, it'll dump 3 feet of snow
No really though, at least get something with a 3-peak, such as the Nokian WRG4. They're basically winter tires that are usable year-round.
-
Discount tire will take em in on trade, I did that once. Fair deal all around
-
Craigslist isn’t so bad; make a clear ad with all the information and a reasonable price. Listen to your gut on ignoring people.
-
@adabofoppo You should look at the Nokian WRG4 as a replacement. I use them as my snow tire but I also go canyon carving with them still. I live in a place where "cold" is 50 degrees so I definitely dont need them 99% of the time. I have these so that I can go skiing and not die driving there. So actual snow performance was not high on my list but they have done well when asked to. Combined with the AWD they feel like real snow tires at least. Just not very good on sheer ice as Ive still experienced ABS moments of fun. But anyways, its a good option if you want a winter tire that is pretty good the rest of the non-winter times.
-
@jminer I think a classifieds section would be a great idea. Maybe have one section for random things people want to get rid of and a pay for play section for commercial items.

I put a set of these on my sportwagen recently as well and love them. Not used them for snow driving *yet
-
Well yeah you are going to have the same sort of "winter" as me now too. I guess further north where you are things are a little bit cooler on average. But yeah unless you head out to Tahoe, they wont see much winter use I would think. My main reason for them anyways was to skirt chain restrictions. Yeah technically anything with M+S will do but I much prefer the tri-peaks rating for sure!

@wrong-wheel-drive
Already have a set of Continental DWS-06s arriving tomorrow. Thanks though.
