@davesaddiction Oh great...kids today can have toys based upon the smurf cartoon that fire plastic arrows, but my childhood was denied a Boba Fett with a firing missile.

@tophercrowder You just bought into the wrong toy line. My childhood was all about Micronauts, and they definitely had working projectiles.

          On walkabout. Back soonish.

Those small parts were just too easy to lose. I lost several of the weapons and was complaining to my mom about it, so she suggested that I write a letter and ask where I could buy more. They sent me a letter to tell me that they didn't sell those separately, but they also sent a small plastic bag filled with weapons! I now had weapons for figures I didn't even own!

It wasn't long after that we saw weapons packs in the store. I'm sure that there were plenty of complaints that led to the weapons packs, but I'm glad that I played a part in getting them on the shelves.

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

Wow! I thought I was the only one with Micronaughts! They worked great WITH the Millineum Falcon and other Star Wars stuff. Better actually, as they were so much more articulated (as in joints, not verbally )😁

@BicycleBuck When I was little, Kenner was still producing Star Wars toys for the original trilogy (hell, it was before RotJ). My parents bought me a Star Wars Droid Factory set for my birthday one year. I played with it a ton, building different droids...but the parts kept breaking.

There were pegs, similar to the foot pegs you could stand action figures on, that held the parts together. After a few uses, the pegs would break and then you could never use that part again.

I wrote a letter to Kenner about the broken parts and about how disappointed I was. In a few weeks, I got a letter back from them which included a full-page list of different play sets that Kenner was willing to send me to make up for the fact that the toy I was enjoying didn't stand up well to regular play.

My 7 or 8 year old brain froze with indecision, and I never got a replacement set.

I'd be willing to bet that letter still exists in my old box of Star Wars toys...wherever that is.

You and I are of the same age. The Christmas after Star Wars was released, my family splurged on a full set for both my uncle and I (he was a few months younger than me). I received everything Rebel Alliance, including an X-Wing and a pile of characters. My uncle got everything Empire, including a Tie Fighter. All of these were from the original issue, so the light sabers were the two-piece version that were double-telescoping (DT). I had both a Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi with DT light sabers.

                                    724ad5d3-bfa5-45c2-8696-0363f652b699-image.png

It was another toy that was replaced with a one-piece version, making the originals worth thousands. Unfortunately, all of my Star Wars toys were lost in our house fire when I was a teenager.

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

That had to be a terribly traumatic event.

It was bad. The house burned to the ground.

The whole story.... It was the weekend after I graduated from High School. My Grandmother threw a party for me, so we were at her house for the day. She lived about an hour away from our house. My girlfriend and I wanted to get together to have our own celebration (movie night - get your mind out of the gutter), so I left Grandma's to be with my girl. My mom decided to stay the night at Grandma's.

Mom still demanded that I be home by midnight and she was the kind of mom who would call the house to make sure I made it by curfew. We lived in the country and our property was mostly forest. When I turned off the highway, I could see a glow over the tops of the trees. I thought, "either my neighbor is having a hell of a bonfire or my house is burning down!" Joke was on me - my house was burning down.

When I got close enough to see the house through the trees, my first concern was whether or not my Mom had changed her mind and had come home. The flames had already made it through the roof over my bedroom which was why I could see the fire from so far away. After making sure Mom's car wasn't there, my next thought was our animals - we had several cats, a litter of kittens, and a rabbit. I ran to the back of the house, hoping that they had all moved back there to escape the flames. I threw a cinder block through one of the windows and was greeted with a fireball in return. That's when I learned that providing oxygen to superheated air was a good way to get burned. Fortunately, I was not.

I stood there for a few minutes in shock, then drove over the neighbor's house to use the phone. I had to make a couple of calls, first to the fire department, then to Grandma's house.

Being in the country meant the only fire department was all volunteer. It took about 40 minutes for them to arrive on scene. It took even long for Mom to get there - Grandma insisted on coming along to "help" and she had to bring my uncle (not the young one) along for support. It took about an hour for them to get on the road and another to get to our property.

The only thing still standing was part of one wall. The rest was ashes.

Mom was gracious and gave me part of the insurance payout to use as I saw fit while getting ready for college. She built a new house. I stayed there the following summer and the Christmas break after that. Then I left home for good. Even years later I would think of something that I used to own and embarrass myself by calling Mom to ask if she had seen it. She was always gracious when she reminded me that we probably lost it in the fire.

The new house was never my home, so I sold the property when she passed a few years ago.

Now I need to go find a place to be alone for a bit....

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

@BicycleBuck I was alive for the first movie, but I didn't see it at the time...was born in '75. The first one I saw was tESB, and most of the toys I had revolved around that movie. The Luke figure I had was in the Bespin outfit, and had the lightsaber as a separate piece. It got lost probably within a year, but I remember it distinctly.

My dad had gotten a new job with a builder, selling custom homes in 1980. We moved into one of the builder's spec houses at the time, and the carpeting in all the rooms were leftovers that whatever carpet place had. Our family room had calico-colored carpet...black, brown, light beige, tan, some orange...all in a seemingly random pattern. Mom loved it because when I spilled grape juice, you couldn't tell it happened after it was mopped up.

It also meant that I regularly lost weapons that went along with my various action figures, both Star Wars and GI Joe. To reference your earlier comment, I ended up losing a lot of Star Wars weapons, but with my GI Joes I eventually was able to buy weapons packs to replace all the lost weapons over the years...and that excited me greatly. I used to build weapons caches and armories with the spares.

Really sorry to hear about that house fire. Had to have been a tough situation.

Was the source of the fire determined? A short in wiring, or no clue?

It was never officially determined. Most volunteer fire departments don’t really have crack forensics teams. We think it could have been a short in some track lighting since it had been acting a bit flaky. I often wondered if the cats managed to start it somehow. I guess we’ll never know!

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.
