The Hyundai Excel went on sale for the 1985 model year.
Microsoft Excel was released in late 1985 (yes, for Mac - Windows would come two years later with 2.0 in 1987).
Therefore, I conclude that the software was named after the car until proven otherwise.
Please use this information as you see fit.

Okay, I see the Fit. How am I supposed to use this information?
-
@MM54 Most importantly, both were terrible. You wanted [a] Lotus.
-
@pos_camaro in both situations!
-
@pos_camaro The car company Lotus Engineering Ltd was founded by two guys named Colin long before the software company Lotus Development Corporation was founded by two guys not named Colin.
-
@Nicky-Chagrin-Janitor-of-SHIELD
This guy figured out the lotus position long before either Colin was born.
-
Canadian Factoid:
Excel Gum was created after 5 years in 1991 after the Hyundai failed to accelerate and take Canadians breath away. -
@MM54 it was an improvement over their previous model, the Hyundai/Lotus 1-2-3
-
@CB I don't see it
-
Does it work now?
-
@MM54
My cousin had one of those first gen Excels. She thought it was a decent car. I don't remember how long she had that impression. -
Some overlap here:
-
@MM54
pictured, me using Excel 1.0.
-
@BritsnSwedes-was-MINIGTI Did you drive there in a hyundai excel?
-
@MM54 no Hyundai but actually I did take my period correct 1985 Jaguar and my 1986 period correct Mac Plus to run period correct MS Excel 1.0. Although I think the hard disk is a little newer.
-
@MM54 now there is a car i haven't seen in a long time.
-
@CB I assumed it would be a Honda
