Here, have a photo of a Polonez in these trying times
-
It's dripping with symbolism with the long road ahead of us, etc, etc. All very deep, I assure you.
-
@borsuq I remember your 'Guess the car i bought' post. That was the first I've ever heard of a Polonez.
-
Oooh, Polonez road trip, sounds fun!
We don't get flat wide open views in my part of the US so someday I want to take a photo like that when I make it out west. That looks an awful lot like Just Jeepin's representation of Indiana. Just that Indiana has 100% less Polonezes in it.

I'm deeply sorry you had to learn of its existence. It is better not to know of such horrors.

Yeah, my area is pretty flat and boring. Few good roads too.
The Polonez actually let me explore the countryside quite a bit though. With the Fiat I'm always hesitant to take it far into the unknown in case the road turns to shit. Those 12" wheels and stiff suspension make venturing onto bad surfaces extremely punishing. The Polonez on the other hand doesn't really care.
-
@borsuq The roads around me would be interesting if they weren't filled with traffic in all directions. Lots of flowing curves and gentle hills all around with endless lines of traffic. Then again, there is absolutely no grid whatsoever so that sure doesn't help traffic. Here's a random map of Atlanta of our attempt at creating a grid. It's not the most fun place to drive and the suburbs aren't much better on the enjoyment front.
-
@whoistheleader Being European I'm rather used to not having streets in a grid. In fact, grids are rather unusual here. That said, I don't find city driving very enjoyable in most cars unless the streets are almost completely deserted.
-
@borsuq City driving requires a lot of attention to not mow down pedestrians and cyclists. The majority of cities had a degree of urban planning but despite being a city that was entirely built then razed by fire then rebuilt during the 19th century, no one even made an attempt. No one thought it would be important enough.
Atlanta was first developed a good bit after the perfectly straight roads and orderly grids of the midwest were first made yet we ended up with absolute chaos. Then we had to entirely rebuild the city and things barely were better. I'm rather a history buff and it fascinates me.
It's interesting as in Europe nearly everywhere was settled long before it was practical to create orderly street grids while in much of North America what was there was demolished to make way for railroads and towns designed with a plan. Atlanta is the exception where the railroad came first but no one cared enough.
-
@Borsuq I am glad to know of the Polonez's existence!
@WhoIsTheLeader Speaking of road trips, depending on COVID, Borsuq's original plan for the Polonez was to road-trip it to the UK for this year's Festival Of The Unexceptional......but of course, that got cancelled
-
@rallydarkstrike That sounds like one of the most me car shows I can think of. Exotics are cool, but normal cars that you don't see anymore make their way into my DOTS with far more regularity than the stupid chrome wrapped supercars I see around.
-
@WhoIsTheLeader Yup, I'd love to go someday!
-
@rallydarkstrike One of these days I'm going to make it across the pond. Or, well, literally anywhere that isn't here. I'm not well traveled at all.
My college does have some fantastic study abroad programs that are covered by my state scholarship. And architecture is a program that really benefits from it especially.

I've only been down into the States before, but nowhere else sadly, so I feel you on that one! And the last time I was down there was before Passports were required, so that tells you how long ago it was (I would've been like...17 or so, maybe? I'm 34 now...)
-
@rallydarkstrike Maybe you can wrap that 126P purchase into a road trip? It'll happen someday. Have a cute little Fiat:
Yeah, I really want to travel but now is definitely not the time for it. Shame, but I want to see somewhere different. At least living in the big city has helped stave off my wanderlust a good deal. Not entirely, but most of it.
-
@WhoIsTheLeader I lived in our 'big city' (i.e. Halifax...which is puny compared to most cities) and I didn't mind it, but I like semi-rural life....not middle of nowhere, but like, say...10-15 mins from town.
Where I am now, I'm like....5 minutes to Mahone Bay, 10 from Lunenburg and like 15 from Bridgewater, so makes it easy to get places.
Also re: that FIAT, nice! Looks like a 126p FL, so 1984-1993.
-
@rallydarkstrike I am currently looking at a 1000+ foot building, the tallest in the southeast US, so yeah a pretty big city. I like it though. Semi rural and rural is nice as is urban and semi urban. But the suburbs aren't my favorite at all. It's nice to be able to get places and sounds like you aren't way out in the sticks.
-
@Well, Nova Scotia only has 1,000,000 people total, so it's not a 'busy' place anyway, so by YOUR standards I may be in the sticks
But it's not bad
-
@borsuq we need more FSO content

The plan was actually always to do it next year, so that's still potentially on.
I only bought the Polonez in early June, which was well after the announcement about the festival being cancelled came out.
