Just a reminder: you can get a minivan with VTEC

@CoolMinivan-Nobody This familiar van popped up on suggestions.... hmmm I wonder who's that could have been?

@CoolMinivan-Nobody I mean I'm as suspicious of CR's reporting as anyone else, but Honda's gotten enough time to work out the kinks so I doubt the modern models are as bad as our RL3 has been.
Except it's Honda and they just claim 3-4 qts of oil consumption is normal and leave the consumer to deal with it........
-
@Mr-Ontop That's funny it popped in your suggestions.
-
@CoolMinivan-Nobody meh, everything's hit or miss. I know two families with early FB Foresters still running their original short blocks and CVTs!

All these comments about Odysseys being problematic, and I'm over here looking at my wife's 2011 Odyssey with 185k on it that I've only ever had to do routine maintenance on...

I mean, people shit on Mopar vans for being unreliable and cheap, yet we have over 1.5 million miles between 4 of them in the family.
An oil cooler thanks to an incompetent tech is the biggest repair any have needed outside of regular maintenance. -

to be fair, the earliest FB Foresters still used the 4-speed auto. By the time they switched to the CVT, the short block shit was mostly fixed
-
@dogisbadob ah, nice. It's the SJ CVT-only Forester I'm talking about, weren't those subject to short block issues in the beginning? Or was it primarily an Impreza problem?

I thought it was the SH that had those short block issues!
The SH had the FB+4-speed auto 2011-2013
The Impreza got the FB+CVT in 2012, so 2 years ahead of the SJBy the time the SJ came out with the FB+CVT, it had been out 3 years, so it should've been enough time to sort out the short blocks.
-
@dogisbadob aha, so yeah, must be the Imprezas I was thinking of since I remember it was some 'new generation' Subaru that was particularly prominent for having short block failures. Maybe the XV Crosstrek, too?
That said, how do SJs hold up? Having driven those two examples I really like their agricultural quality and wouldn't be opposed to one as a beater in a few years once they're at the bottom of depreciation.

The SJ is still pretty new, but so far so good. Changing the CVT fluid requires a scan tool that can read transmission temperature. There is a good video on it on YT.
There was a recall on the rear springs.
Don't forget that the non-turbo Forester was still available with a manual for the entire run 2014-2018. However, the 14 manual wasn't available with a sunroof, but that combo came back in 2015. The big sunroof is the best thing about the Forester.
Early FB's would have the short block issue no matter what they were installed in 2011-2012 (maybe 13?), but every one that needed a new shortblock probably got it replaced by now.

@dogisbadob true, and good point on that combo of manual with pano roof, I do really enjoy the amount of glass area on those cars. I guess when I talk about how they hold up I mean if they have any of the HG issues the EJ was infamous for or if there's some timing chain tensioner that likes to fail a la GM HFV6.

no, there are no problems with the FB head gaskets
