Welcome to New Overlandia!
-
With much thanks and appreciation to Jminer and crew, Overland is back in business! I don't quite have a handle on this place but this much I do know:
We are being graciously hosted on a cool platform that isn't ad-supported for now. It may be "Patreon" style funding, it may go to ads...I don't know. You can donate to the host with the button thats shown when you create a topic. Whether you do or not is up to you, I can't tell you exactly how the funds are collected or used.
I also know that as of right now there are no authors here, that is to say, everyone is an author. Thats how it will be for now, it may change.
I am the "curator" of this site, a title I enjoy much more than emperor. It's basically a mod. I no longer have any affiliation with Oppo in that role.
There currently is no "cross-posting" to the oppositelock category. That may change but what you write here is what stays here unless you create a new post there and link to the one you write here.
I am still reachable at gmail 'spokemaster82' if you want to hit me up directly and we still have a discord for more chit-chatty stuff. If you want in on the discord I will send an invite if you email me. Don't know if the discord will last forever, I don't love its format but it is nice to have a more casual hangout space for now.
Lastly, It's good to be back! I look forward to your posts. As of right now the basic rules of this place still stand as far as I'm concerned. We've technically never needed formal rules because we've been a relatively small bunch, but given that we are now fully open I will be moderating based on the "be excellent to each other" rule. please don't make me be a moderator.
Thanks all.
HHFP

Awww yiss.

I've always enjoyed the overland crossposts. You guys may actually inspire me to get out and do something one day haha.
Thank you for your years of service at oppositelock, I'm not sure of your feelings about it, but I for one am sad to see you step back. I always felt like you did a really great job.
-
@dawrx Thanks, that means a lot. I really did enjoy my time in that role. For many years Oppo was a huge part of my life, emotionally, and it pushed me to do big things. Same story from so many. Glad I got to be a part of that. I've offered my services to the oppo group if they ever need me, but I figure it was time to pass the torch.

Also quick question, are we going with just Overland now or are we keeping Overland&Expedition?
-
@bloody-the-resident-shitposting-saffer overland? Thoughts? It miught be too late to change it, I thought it would be a little easier. Also, we are getting a vanity URL
-
I kind of liked O&E as it kind of rolled off the tong, however I'm cool with Overland.opposite-lock.com. I tend to not like change in the best of times so all of this happening at once might be influencing my thought process.
-
@HammerheadFistpunch Glad you migrated the overloading stuff here. I don't 4X anymore, but I still like lurking around it. And technically I still have a 4WD with the Eagle! Sort of a Jeep... I mean it's got Jeep parts... You should 100% post your articles about 4WD systems and such over here.
-
Bravo! This is some of the best of Oppo.
Makes me want to move out west.
-
@sn4cktimes Fun story, Im actually getting paid for those now!
-
@HammerheadFistpunch That is awesome! I shall go check those out!
-
@sn4cktimes I will also be writing over at overlander.com when it launches, as will @mtdrift. I'll keep the group informed. That doesn't mean I wont write here too. I've made it very clear to the powers that be that my content isn't exclusive, though I won't be able to post the same thing twice as that mucks up the SEO over there.
-
I won't be hanging out here but I'm happy to hear you have this worked out.
Also, that photo makes me nervous. I don't like sheer dropoffs. Heights are fine but I have a sort of fear of unguarded cliffs and such.
-
@whoistheleader It's called "high place syndrome". I know because I suffer acutely. Me no likey edges. Though on a rope Im okay. go figure.
-
Kudos! Looks rad. Happy to help if needed.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch I'm the EXACT SAME.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch If I'm strapped into a harness and climbing up something high for recreation, I have no qualms about living dangerously. If I'm on the roof and my duct tape rolled to the edge, I crawl to it. I do NOT like unguarded edges. It's not the height, it's the risk.
-
@whoistheleader Exactly this. Though I do seem to spend a lot of time around cliffs...
-
I'm pretty much the same and I used to rock climb in High school. Sometimes we humans are a funny bunch
-
@hammerheadfistpunch J.P. Sartre said famously that vertigo is not the fear of falling, but really the fear that you might throw yourself from the precipice because you have the choice to do so. Your mind isn't equipped to reconcile those possibilities, so you get physically ill.
Fun guy.

We can change either if you like. No & in it as that'll muck with things but most of the rest is fine.

NICE.
Part of me wonders if there should be a thread for self-promotion/linking over to Oppos' work. A bunch of us write stuff elsewhere as well, and a "Post Your Work" could keep it contained.
Glad to see O&E found a home. Someday I'm going to get that dang Cayenne...
-
Wooooooo!

@stef-schrader Cayenne? Stef I am disappoint
