OPPO Automation Challenge #2: VOTE to decide what it shall be!
-
Hello Oppo, here's a poll. If you want to know what any of these options mean and what the challenges will entail, then you'll probably want to read a bit before you vote.
The first Oppo Automation Challenge went off with many hitches, but everyone who partook seemed to really enjoy it! I really enjoyed looking at all the different cars and sharing them will all of you. In about a week, I'll be back home in FL and reunited with my omega-powerful gaming machine, meaning I'll be able to run another one of these challenges/participate in it.
I already know the rules will be officially released on Febuary 1st, but I'm still undecided as to what I want to challenge Oppo to build. I have a few loose ideas, and I wanted to share them here. Read about them, pick your favorite, and it'll give me something to form the official ruleset around.
Muscle Car Madness
The oil crisis hasn't quite sunk in, but emissions are slowly being cracked down on. So, this is your last, glorious year to build a gas guzzler. The main rule is that it must have a catalytic converter, which in the 70s would be a new and horsepower sucking technology. It'll be a challenge to make a performance car that meets green standards.Fleet Vehicle Face-off
Biz Co, a leading manufacturer of things, needs utility vehicles for their local delivery drivers. Vans, trucks, that sort of thing. The goal would be to design a practical, yet fuel-efficient and overall cheap product. It doesn't need to be exciting, it just needs to work, and work well.Post-war Performance Cars
War is over! Hurray! Now the common man is jonesing to get their hands on a relatively cheap, but fun to drive sports car built anywhere from 1946 to 1950. It's no racing machine, but it's something fun to fling around the road and impress the misses with. This wouldn't be "build the most performance-oriented car of the 50s," this would be "build a fun car from the 50s."Microcar Mania
Not necessarily a Kei Car, more like a Groggomobil Dart or something along those lines. A small engine (1,600cc max), and a small car (max wheelbase TBD, but it'll be small). You'll want to make something that handles great, and is peppy for its size... speaking of Groggo:Cheap and Crap
It's east Germany, somewhere in the 50s (a lot of the challenges listed take place around this era). Your job is to make something that moves. Price is the most important factor, and everything after that is an added bonus. In essence, the challenge is to make a ridiculously cheap, yet still somewhat reasonable car.Fan of Vans
Its the late 60s/early 70s, automakers got clammy over minivans as they were being purchased more and more, soon to erase the station-wagon body style almost completely (stupid minivans). Your challenge? Make one! It'll be pretty basic, but you'd be better off having some comfort features and three rows of seating.Hypercar Hysteria
The 90s roll along and supercars are all the craze, so performance automakers try to cram as many horses as possible into their production cars (yes, this is still a production car, not some concept speed machine that takes a million years to build). This round may not have as many restrictions, looks will play a part in the car's success, and the real challenge will come with building a fully-fledged racing car... then racing it (obviously, whatever round is selected, there will be a race set up).So, there are the options.
I'm fairly certain we'll be doing almost all these challenges as time goes on, but for now, here are your options. Any suggestions on how these ideas can be tweaked are welcome, but the general principle of each still stands.
Now vote!
Small Edit: Tagging people who took place last time/haven't commented in case they haven't seen this yet. @MM54 @Jawzx2 @CivicWagonEngineer

@taylor-martin I didn't participate in the last one, mainly because I didn't have Automation. But I got some free time in quarantine to learn, so I want to get in on this!
-
@snuze By all means! I think what I'm going to do is announce the category/rules on the 1st, have the cars be due on the 15th to give people time, have the "on paper" winners announced on the 17th. If we race the same day, I could get a race video up on the 20th. Then, wait 10 days, announce the next challenge, and the vicious cycle continues.
It'd be a lot of fun to make this a monthly thing! And you should be apart of it!
-
@taylor-martin The Muscle Car Madness could be interesting but I really like Micromachines and Cheap and Crap because it's so unusual. I think an extreme production unit currency limit for the 80s and 90s might be more interesting though, but I fully support the latter.

PLEASE IGNORE THE POLL ON OPPO, I CAN'T GET IT TO GO AWAY. THE LINK IS THE ACTUAL POLL, OR YOU CAN CLICK HERE.
Never!
-
@taylor-martin I am against anything with a price cap.
-
@taylor-martin me every time I see a poll.
-
@whoistheleader Did you finally cave and get Automation? Either way, the Cheap and Crap challenge is my favorite too since it'd literally be trying to build the cheapest car possible to just churn out. Everyone would go about it slightly differently and those differences would make a... difference...
Either way, I'm not casting my vote unless it's a tie, in which case we'll do the next event in the next challenge.
-
@taylor-martin No, I have no say really because I can't participate. Also, I have exactly zero free time and am basically only checking Oppo over my snack breaks (for my sanity).
-
@cb Then your best bet would likely be the hypercar challenge, but there are plenty of resources to aide you in cutting costs, from the materials you use and such.
Generally speaking, the cheaper options are the ones at the top of the selection (ex. when choosing a frame, it starts with steel, then aluminum, and so on. Steel is mucho cheap).
-
@whoistheleader Well, I'm glad you're enjoying your snack break, but sheesh that's rough. Hang in there.
-
@highlander You voted for my mom? I thought we voted for Joe...

I've done a few fail polls here. I know this feeling. Hahaha
-
This looks like a very good excuse for me to finally pick up this game.
-
@t0ast join ussssss...
-
I voted last night, didn't have much to say here! I may participate (the category won't decide that, my availability to spend time on it will) and probably do quite poorly again.
-
@mm54 Just making sure. No Oppo left behind!
-
@taylor-martin Voted! I like Post-War Performance, Cheap and Crap and Muscle cars. My brother recently picked up Automation (and BeamNG) and has been churning out post-war performance and crap as he likes to run the campaign and starts early... I've been inspired
-
@jawzx2 If your brother wants to join in he's more than welcome to! The more the merrier!
-
@taylor-martin Ooo, cheap crap or Microcar for me!
I have a FIAT 126p ripoff somewhere I can tweak up, or a Eastern Bloc-style rear-engined sedan!
-
@Taylor-Martin Microcars and Cheap and Crap sound fun. Slow car fast is always fun
-
I've voted but happy to try any challenge
