Need Ammunition for New Company Vehicle Decision
-
So my company is replacing my vehicle, 2012 Ford Escape. The vehicle has been gutless and nothing but problems for the vehicle maintenance. Another supervisor and I have the same vehicle but most have a supercab (extended) F150. Most recently they got supercab longbeds and they are like driving limos. I like the flexibility of the 4 doors but don’t feel I need the size of the half ton. It would also be easier to park a smaller vehicle in the space in my backyard. So I was pushing for a Crew Cab Ford Ranger. Partly because I’m interested in them and partly because of the single engine choice. I’m afraid if we go Colorado they would cheap out and get the 4-cyl NA engine and be in the same gutless boat I’m in.
The problem is our general manager isn’t sold on needing a 4 door. Expressly what the public’s perception of spending the extra money over the extended cab. Also other people would try to push for crew cabs
This is where you come in collective OPPO. I need to convince of why I need a crew cab.
Some of my reasons are:
- As the supervisor post-coronavirus I will be taking people in my vehicle.
- I don’t need the bed space gained by extended cab and would rather keep my tools in the cab which would be bigger in the crew cab.
- Supervisor has employees that can carry the stuff in their half tons.
- Then tell the public we got a smaller cheaper truck to get the 4 door.
- Better value when we auction them in 10 years???
Help me get my way!!! Or convince me to be happy with what I get.

Tools in cab are more secure than tools in bed
Ranger is (probably) cheaper to buy, as you mentioned
Probably better on gas so cheaper to operate?
Not being 25 feet long means less chance of collision
-
Crew cabs in general hold higher resale
Midsize crew should be cheaper than full-size extended cab, not usually much more than extended midsize though
Tools inside = no theft, no weather damage
Midsize extended = only 1 passenger realistically
Should maybe get better mpg
Might be cheaper insurance?
Running costs might be cheaper (tires and brakes) but F150 may not be much more with volume discount as more made. Also if the fleet is all F-150s it would be cheaper too as they can all buy the same stuff... toss up. -
@snakesm13 get a bronco instead?
-
@mybirdistheword it would be the bronco sport...
-
@snakesm13 Alternately:
-
@rider The public LOVES Raptors!

My public perception isn't that they bought a crew cab truck... it's that 4 guys are sitting around inside it, on the clock, doing nothing.
Honestly I see lots of full size trucks being way under utilized and I would be happy if I saw more small trucks out there. I think you make great points, for your usage case it sounds like a 4 door Ranger is the better choice.
-
@snuze Ha, didn’t think of that. But if you were an environmentalist, you would rather one truck idling with 4 guys in it doing nothing than four trucks with 1 guy in each sitting idling.
-
@snakesm13 Fair point. But most people are stupid and would probably buy the 4 small trucks better than 1 big truck argument. I dunno.

Why the sport? Sticker for a bronco has to be similar to an f-150

Hahaha we don’t even get 4x4 on our trucks. What do you think the public perception would be on a purpose built topless off-roader. 100% about perception not cost. Public thinks taxes pay my salary but they don’t.
-
@snakesm13 Remove the 4x4 badging then. You'd make up a lot of money in resale from getting the 4x4 crew cab, though if the extended cab has clamshell doors that's not half bad either.
-
@whoistheleader We have a 1-ton diesel that is 4x4 and we had to remove the sticker from the side because someone complained.
-
@snakesm13 . . . . . . . . . I guess it only takes one NIMBY but really? . . . . . . . like. . . . . . I bet they own a full sized 4x4 truck too, just like. . . .
-
@snakesm13 i mean I guess I don't know what it is you do. Not like you need a crazy trim. What possible job would require a comfortable truck, tools, but not require 4x4 or some other offroad driving? Bronco 2door starts at like 29 stripped. 34k for the 4 door.
-
You could go for an Alfa Stelvio in green !
-
@snakesm13 Transit Connect. A four door Ranger is a guaranteed way to piss off up to three real people and convince them that they should have got an Uber.
-
@snakesm13 What kind of job do you do where the public complains so much? That's silly. You can get a 2021 crew cab long bed Canyon/Colorado for about $28 for 2WD or $31 4WD, and with that body style it forces you into the V6 engine even at the stripper work truck level. Personally I'd go to the LT level 2WD for $30k so you get the better interior and cruise control (how isn't that standard?!). I bet you can find some new 2020 options on dealer lots for less than $30. Some ammunition is a lot of trucks these days don't even offer crew cabs and you'll see significant savings over a new half ton getting a mid-size. Plus it's a chevy and not a GMC.
Here's a new 2021 CC/LB for $27k

@bandit @MybirdIStheword I work for a Municipality of sorts that treats water to sell to the surrounding cities and industries. Since we are technically not for profit and most of our revenue is from the industrial water, everything is sold "at cost". If it looks like to the public we are buying unnecessary things, like 4 door truck when we could have got extended cab, people complain that is the reason the cost of water is high. When in reality a 50hp VFD for an additional pump to supply more water to the new golf course cost more than my truck to maintain the system to get water to the city... My job is in the Instrumentation/Electrical/Telemetry/Programming side of making the system work. Less about getting to a leak site, more about having expensive tools/computers in the cab of the truck and occationally carrying a flow meter, conduit or some other in the elements device that would be better suited for a bed. But again I have other employees with half tons for the heavy work.

Get a TC and chop it into a mini truck with Subaru style BRAT seats in the back!
-
@snakesm13 yes...most dual cab utes of the Rangers ilk have back seats more suited to smaller people, teenagers and children. To my knowledge, the only midsize utes able to comfortably fit a 6 footer behind a 6 footer driver are the SsangYong Musso and the new GWM Cannon.
