Alright Google, I've got a bone to pick with you

Go on over to Google. Search up "Moped". I'll wait.
Notice anything... fucky?
The word "Moped" is a portmanteau of two words that adequately describe these wheezy beasts. Both word and machine feature mo and ped- that is, motor and pedal. Ped without mo is a bicycle. Mo without ped is a motorcycle or scooter of some sort.
Look again at that google search. Note- most of the photo results lack the ped! Hence, they cannot be called a moped.
Here's a handy flow chart.
Now, go on over to Face Book Market Place Dot Com. Search up "Moped."
You see all those things that are most definitely not mopeds? The scoots with more than 50cc and a CVT? E-bikes? A goddamn Helix? A Zuma, which is cool, but not a moped? Go ahead and report em. Hit em with that "inaccurate description."
Be the change you want to see in the world. Or the change I want to see, at least. Fix that algorithm.

Yeah....as somebody who would really like a scooter at some point, I've noticed that almost everybody seems to use scooter and moped interchangeably despite the fact they are two very different things...
-
I'll be completely honest: TIL.

@qaaaaa
I don't agree that a typical moped should have an autobox. States that require an automatic gearbox for something to be declared a moped need to get their shit together.Talking about mopeds and nopeds, I was rather looking forward to having a ride on this lovely Komar my cousin's husband is restoring:
It was supposed to be ready for last summer, but unfortunately he's hit part supply issues.
Also, being a proper noped, this thing has a manual 2 speed gearbox:
Once this was finished there was a plan to move on to an older, slightly more far gone example with actual pedals, but that's looking unlikely now.
Also, relevant song (NSFW):

@borsuq I think the main reason for autobox is simplicity. I've rode a moped that had a rigged up two speed box on a Tomos A35 engine (I forget the frame). The shifter was a cool jockey shifter on the tank, but it was a pain in the ass to use. Can't really have foot shift on a pedaled bike.
I would like to get an A35 four speed noped box. Cylinder, jet, pipe, sprocket, and it would move. But then it wouldn't really be a "moped", and I'd have to reg as a constructed motorcycle, which seems expensive...

Aye, that's why the old commie stuff I'm most familiar with seems to almost always have a rotating handle shifter. Annoyingly, it's a part for that rotating shifter assembly that the guy who was restoring that Komar is missing. Fairly sure he's going to have to have it fabricated if he ever gets round to resuming the project.
Also, additionally, another relevant tune (NSFW):

@borsuq Pity we didn't get very many eastern block mopeds in the US.
I wonder why
-
This is good Oppo. I think this new home will be alright.
-
@borsuq Huh, I didn't know about this! I do like my some Eastern Bloc small bikes and scooters too! Yay simplicity!
Hope he gets it sorted....does the part have to be metal that he is looking for....? Maybe he could get it 3D printed in plastic too?
-
@rallydarkstrike I'm not sure which part exactly he's missing, but I it's a metal bit. From what I know without it the moped won't stay in gear properly.

Does he have the original? If so he just needs to find somebody with a 3D scanner to scan it and then they ca 'fix' it in the scanned model and just print a new one

@Qaaaaa I have a friend that rides a Harley and he calls everything with two wheels a scooter. It's kind of hilarious.

@jminer hayabusas are basically the same thing as Zumas.
