Pre-sunrise overlooking the ocean in the backyard picture this morning for attention.

So I spent a whole bunch of time researching jazz music today to better culture myself on a music genre that I am less familiar with. Plus I wanted to show my girlfriend that I could take an interest in something she is interested in. To go out of my comfort zone of sorts. Anyways, I figured maybe some oppos could benefit from my research as well if they want to explore some music.

      A quick overview:

      A quick history lesson:

      Top artists:

      Some science:

      Bebop:

This is a scientific breakdown to learning about bebop:

@Wrong-Wheel-Drive I enjoy Jazz, but some of it can get really out there and it is one of those things very much better live. I used to play trombone in a Jazz big band too, that was a lot of fun even though I was only ever middling at best.

Soloing definitely also is a very special and unique skill. Takes tremendous ability to do well.

I concur with @jminer: jazz is definitely something to experience live. I miss being able to go see live music.

@wrong-wheel-drive My grandpa was the president of the SF Jazz Club a couple times I think, I have pictures of him with many of the greats. He played at least five instruments I can think of. I played alto sax badly for a few years!

It's something that I'm starting to get into more. I played trumpet in middle school and high school, and was even in the middle school jazz band. I was okay at it, but never great.

There are some "traditional" jazz pieces that I've liked since that time. Ones that come to mind are Al Hirt's Java and Dave Brubeck's Take Five (I've more recently discovered that whole album is good).

Most of my interest up to this point has leaned towards the non-traditional stuff - smooth jazz especially. I spent a lot of time listening to smooth jazz backing our local 24hr weather channel in my youth. Gregg Karukas, Art Porter, Herb Alpert, Spyro Gyra among others have been seeing rotation around here.

I was planning on finally attending a performance or two of the local jazz festival this year (Berks Jazz Fest), but obviously that never happened

I don't mind Jazz, but I am not big into it...I will say there are a few electro-swing songs I really like though...

                        Clifford Brown and Max Roach.

                        You're welcome.

                        That's a great list, though.

@wrong-wheel-drive Yup, I love me some good jazz. Have plenty on records. When wrenching or doing cad work I really enjoy listening to 60-80's Japanese jazz.

I do like Bossa Nova and tune to JazzFM back then when I still needed to drive to the train station.

Watchmojo is a fun site, but I wouldn't take one of their top 10 lists as anything like definitive. Dave Brubeck's Take 5 is one of my favorites. Lots of cross-overs from Jazz into pop and rock, so the genre is pretty amorphous - most people will find something they like in the genre.

Brubeck is a favorite, as is Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers.

After setting up Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers in Pandora, I was eventually led to

. If I hear that song while I'm falling asleep, it will lead me into a dream that I've had over & over numerous times. It usually involves my gf playing the piano part while I'm walking on the sidewalk outside our house in the middle of the night. Weird stuff is going on in the backyards of the houses around us, and I'm being followed by someone that I can't see. It always gets super creepy, and then I realize what's going on and wake up.

For the record, my gf has never played, nor do we own, a piano.
