I've only owned one car. Is it German?
-
No, really, do I? Designed by Daewoo, powertrain by Opel, built by GM, and sold by Chevy.
This is the most German car I've driven so what part German have I experienced?
-
@whoistheleader 33% maybe?
I wonder how the percentages would really work out. Like the alltrack is a german designed/powertrain/built car built in mexico, the e-golf is the same but built in germany. Or what about a Honda built here?
-
@whoistheleader My car was built in Belgium which is practically Germany (just ask any German leader from the first half of the 20th century!)

That's like saying my Solstice is German because it was rebadged/rebodied as an Opel GT at some point and has an Ecotec...
-
@tonicipriani Well, if you had an Opel GT it would be more German. But you don't have the GT, you have a Solstice. If the power train is still German in the Pontiac, it's part German at least.
-
@whoistheleader I was going to say "No. I usually go by VIN country of origin" but then remembered that my partner's Renegade has an Italian VIN and the only Fiata I've looked at had a Japanese VIN... so instead I am going to contemplate the nature of origin quietly in my drinking corner.

I think my car is only American as far as it's built here. VWs built in Mexico are part Mexican. My car has a very mixed origin.

That would be because of where it's built, right? Is country of origin referring to the brand or place of manufacture? So is the Acura NSX actually Japanese at all? It what about the first gen Tundra/Sequoia?
-
@whoistheleader Yeah I'd say it's about as american as a US built honda or BMW or the like, and more american than a mexican built Ram truck (dodges angry mob claiming their truck is more american than apple pie). World cars are cool and I'm guessing forms of the cruze exist in most countries GM sells in?
-
Too many cupholders to be german.
-
@whoistheleader Yeah my argument fell apart pretty quickly haha. Funny enough all of my vehicles (and all but two of my past vehicles) the country it was built in is the same as the country of origin. The only outliers were my 2009 Civic and my 2001 Accord, which were built in the Canada and the US respectively.
-
I think there is basically no one that as a domestic vehicle from any country anymore. My GX was made in Japan from Japanese suppliers, but its airbags come from Utah.
-
@whoistheleader Do you use your blinkers? If not, then it is German.

According to Wikipedia, assembly sites are "Australia: Elizabeth, South Australia (Holden; 2011–2016)
Brazil: São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo (GM Brazil)
China: Shenyang, Liaoning (Shanghai GM)
Colombia: Bogota (GM Colmotores, 2011–2015)
India: Halol, Gujarat (GM India; 2009–2017)
Kazakhstan: Ust-Kamenogorsk
Russia: Saint Petersburg
South Korea: Gunsan, Jeonbuk (GM Korea; 2008–2016)
Thailand: Rayong (GM Thailand; 2009–2017)
United States: Lordstown, Ohio (Lordstown Assembly; 2011–2016)
Vietnam: Hanoi (GM Vietnam; 2010–2016)"It's a VERY globalized car sold under many different brands including Holden and Daewoo in particular. That's just the first gen (we didn't get the hatch and wagon variants).
-
@rctothefuture Hmm, 4 cupholders not including four useless door pocket cupholders isn't a lot for a 5 passenger vehicle.

The blinkers are incredibly quiet on this vehicle. So much so, that I frequently have passengers tell me they feel uncomfortable that I do not use them when I in fact do. I'd call that a win for the German argument.

*honorary german blinkers
Had no idea these came as a wagon outside the US. Very nice lines, imho...
-
@akioohtori That's a pretty unlikely figure. So few cars are like that nowadays. I'd bet my car is even a little Japanese and Mexican if you count where some of the components came from.
-
@spacekraken I actually do think the sedan looks the best and that the first gen hatch was ungainly, but that wagon ain't bad looking at all. The second gen hatch is still the prettiest of all the Cruzes.
-
My truck was designed in California, engineered in Michigan assembled in Canton, Mississippi, and powered by an engine built in Tennesee.
It's a Nissan.
-
@cobrajoe And offroaded by an American in America using American dirt. As it should be. I'd count that to be a fully American truck.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch My ‘09 Forester was listed as 100% Japanese parts content. Meanwhile my ‘19 Crosstrek is something like 90% Japanese parts content with 5% being US.
I’m not sure how far this gets broken down; is this major subsystems or every single component that goes into each subsystem?
-
@whoistheleader 2nd gen hatch in RS trim was almost my choice until I drove the Mini. The cruze hatch is a lovely vehicle and I'm sad it's gone.
-
@rctothefuture You could get a brown manual diesel Cruze hatch at one point. It really was a great car. The sedans were good too but I thought the second gen sedans were pretty ugly from the rear.

Where did you find the information on parts content?
