But as you have no doubt observed, it is like this.
In other news, to the shock and amazement of precisely nobody, I'm an idiot.
my kingdom for some grease

@smallbear what is or was that?

A bunch of unsecured pins acting as a roller bearing. As I was disassembling one part of the device, the pin came partway out, and since the pin was going to have to get out of the way for the next step anyway, I yanked it out without thinking... it didn't have to, and wasn't supposed to, come all the way out. I'm just lucky I've got all the pins. I think.

It can be fixed, but man is it tedious. Good luck on your attempt.

Anything can be fixed. The question is how insane you go on the process.

Also, you seem to have experience... My opinion is grease is the answer to assembling this. Thoughts?

@smallbear putting that back together will be character building...and greasy.

Plenty experience with U-joints cups and needle bearings. Use a couple picks or toothpicks if you don't have picks and you'll need tweezers or nice needle noses. And yup, little dabs of grease. Can't quite figure out what you got going on there, but for u-joints cups, assumed dry or junky grease because it hit the dirt and is now contaminated. Should work similar for that? Looks like pin slides through both holes and the ring w/needles in it. Needles just ride on the pin and inside edges of black piece keep them from moving out of the center roller?
- Collect needles (good luck!)
- Clean cup, degrease.
- Wrap outer surface in rag, mount in wrap in vise/channel locks
- With finger run a very thin line of grease around inside
- Touch grease on the pin, use the pick usually
- Use tweezers to put in cup, pick to align
- Add another, align with first
- Work around whole cup
- Last one in is tough, easy to mess it up, have patience.
- Grease up pin side heavily, put on cap, spin a bunch...
If I'm correct put the center roller in place first and drop each needle in with tweezers. Or put the roller on a thin piece of sheet metal, drop needles in, then pin, put up to piece, remove pin, slide roller (with sheetmetal) into place, drop in pin through two holes (one mount and the roller) then remove sheetmetal and slide pin through other mount. Chuck it up in something to keep stable.
DO NOT DROP lol.
Drink.

Drink.- I'm not even going to think about that.
- Very.

Hw many pins are you missing?

If no grease available, maybe peanut butter.... or crisco...

I don't think I'm missing any. Worst case I'm missing one, which in this application falls under "good enough".
"Lucky" would be the word I'm looking for.

Butter... Now there's a suggestion with potential. I'm glad I didn't think of that before giving up for the night... I'd have kept going, and I was already fast hitting the "shaky hands" stage and would have probably lost the works.
Giving life to the word "butterfingers".

So did you ever actually say what device this is a part of?

Nope! It's a strapping machine.

That wasn't nearly as exciting as I thought it would be.

No, not very interesting, but equally frustrating
