Today in a nutshell
-
I don't know why people don't pay attention to weather reports or the news. We all knew an ice storm was coming. Why were people shocked. Why were people driving. Why were there fifteen cars stuck at the side of the road with a few collisions in a one and a half kilometre stretch.
The road had a banked turn. Everyone slid down sideways into the ditch. And yet people kept coming and ending up in the ditch. In the ice storm and freezing rain. That we all knew was coming.
Who was fine? Me, the Toronto driver, used to ice storms and shitshows, and the BC guy being overly careful. I hate this place sometimes. Drivers are morons.
-
@cb In MA we look at the weather but everyone thinks the highway department will clear the roads and salt/deice. Then they also think their AWD can drive over any obstacles including black ice. People overestimate these things but also underestimate how bad of drivers they really are.
-
@krustywantout Amen on overestimating the safety features and how good they are at driving. I watched a man slide slowly away.
"What kind of tires you got on there?"
"All seasons!"
"You mean no seasons?"Seriously, all season tires in Saskatchewan? In the winter? Are you dense?
-
@cb blame the road department for building a road with slope in an area as flat as a a pancake.
-
@highlander Correction line means it needs to turn.
-
@CB Ban. All. Seasons. At least for the six months of a year you get snow up there
-
@cb I hate it when light jacket weather hits with no warning. Last week, it was 75 one day and dropped down to 65 the next- how are we supposed to cope with that?
But what yout really need is to avoid people and being outside. Just stay inside with Sammy and Kijiji. -
@cb That image looks like me about one year ago. I though that the steps in front of my house were just wet but I quickly found out otherwise. I managed to crawl back into the house where I promptly passed out, waking up some time later with my face still planted against the wall. Healing my bruised tailbone took at least three months, and I required special cushions just to sit without screaming in pain.
I'm prepared this year having just bought a 50 lb bag of ice melt. My timing couldn't have been better - it was 54 degrees F today. At least it's in the house where it can be useful instead of sitting in my car, a trip to which would probably result in broken bones if I needed to retrieve the stuff on an icy day.
-
@spacekraken Aren't snow tires required in certain conditions? I know that you need chains or snows/4x4 to go into certain mountain passes when it's snowing near where I live. No way you'd get away with just all seasons.
-
@rider Same here (oregon, and no exceptions for 4x4 with all seasons which is good in my book) but they don't check or enforce it in any way lol. Guessing the same thing in SK.
-
@spacekraken Snow tires are not required by law in Saskatchewan. Which is dumb.
-
@cb WELL WINTER IS A-COMIN' AND A CHILL IS IN THE BREEZE, YOUR PIRATE DAYS ARE OVER ONCE THE RIVER STARTS TO FREEZE
evidently not since you're the only one who can safely get around. time to knock 'em cold and sail off with their hay

Holy heck! That must have been, what, half the entire town?!
-
@baconsandwich It was the highway. So bozos from out of town, local bozos, trucker bozos, just a real load of nimrods.

I know it’s not the most well received but I think the Can Feds should mandate 3 peaks from Dec 1 to Mar 1 country wide. $2000 fine and a VI for winter rated tires if found not in compliance. Don’t like it? Park your car. If involved in an accident without then insurance may void (snow or no snow). Driving on 3 season or summers below freezing is irresponsible and this is coming from a loon on motorcycle 8mo of the year. It’s something that really irks me.
Even here and Victoria where we get barely any snow, the temps are low enough they’re more than acceptable to run that duration. Additionally we have so much more precipitation so it’s better to have a tire with more siping anyways.
I posted in jminers post there but buddy had a 4h commute home yesterday (instead of 40min) from school because 4 separate goofs crashed during rush hour in the rain.

Yes. Most people are. My friend was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for a couple years. I told him he should get snow tires. He balked at the idea. They had a Subaru, so no need.
Guess who's wife crashed the Subaru by sliding on ice?
